A How To Guide: themed lists

Preface
When I was a bit more active in searching for fics, I was asked to make a list on this or that topic rather often. And when I was asked, I sometimes refused — because I’m here having fun rather than fulfilling wishes, or fulfilling wishes only when it’s fun for me too. So when I wasn’t interested in the suggested theme, I often replied, “Why don’t you do it yourself?” To which I often got the answer like, “Nobody knows me, so I won’t collect as many fics as you will” or “But I don’t know fandom as well as you do,” or something else along these lines.
Firstly, such attitude never got anybody far. If you want something, you better work for it ‘cos expecting things to appear out of thin air on a golden platter just because you want them is, let’s put it mildly, unrealistic.
I’m perfectly aware that when one has fof-list about a thousand people, it’s much easier to get questions answered or to get help at all than when there are only two close friends that read your journal. But at the same time, I think it’s an excuse, not a real problem. When I made my first list, I was a very green but curious newbie with a small friend-list, about 20 people on which were mutual. What do you need? A bit of enthusiasm, really.
So here is some helpful advice and a “How To guide” for those who’d possibly like to do it but are reluctant because of this and that. Spend some time on it, and you’ll have your own corner made as *you* want of the things that *you* find interesting. You’ll like it, promise :) Lanta and lira_snape have done so, and I bet they like it. And when you have something to offer people, they will come, use it, and like what you do too. But be ready to work for it. It’s a pleasant kind of work, really, not like mucking stables!

1. So there’s a topic/theme/plot you like.
Consider this: have you seen many fics with this plot/theme? Is it a popular theme? I mean, are there many people who like to write and read about it or are there just a few? If it seems to you that it’s not a popular plot, don’t give up — it just means that it’s a bit harder to search for it. It’s much worse if a plot/theme is too popular. Say, I don’t think it’s possible for one person to compile and maintain a list of fics featuring heterosexual marriage; there are just too many of them! So, use your logic and reader’s experience. Think if you want to limit it to certain pairings or make it general. I am, for instance, a non-OTP kind of reader, so I don’t limit my searches with one pairing. You might be quite different. Themed list: Harry, rescued

This is the list of fics where Somebody rescues Harry from the Dursleys, for Accioslash.
Usually I don’t make single-scenario based searches, but I’m ready to make an exception in this case. Firstly, what Accioslash wants, she gets :) And secondly, there are lots of fics with this scenario, so I guess the number deserves a separate list.
What I take:
- fics where anybody (Snape, Lupin, Tonks, Puss-in-Boots, whoever) comes and takes Harry from the Dursleys. Harry might be kept in a locked room, beaten, abused, raped, or he might be just unhappy - it doesn’t matter as long as it’s perceived as a rescue.
- slash, gen, het, anything.
King Draco’s code, or: What I don’t take:
- Harry should be actually rescued from the Dursleys. If he was visited but not taken away, if he run away on his own, if he was found in the street, it doesn’t qualify.
- the rescue operations we have seen in canon don’t count;
- big fat Nota Bene: speaking from bitter experience, the problem with some fics on this list is going to be the truly horrible way of how they are written. So I’m asking you to not bring fics where the author absolutely can’t cope with grammar and spelling. I realise that some people are less literate than others. But if the author doesn’t know that there are such things as commas, there’s a chance that I won’t take that fic. I’m tolerant enough in this respect, not being a native speaker myself, so if I am squicked with grammar, it’s usually saying something.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, who rescues Harry, and what the pairing(s) is/are.

So, I pretend to be academic and call it autoerotic fiction. Borrowing definitions from McTabby, it’s also known as: “Selfslash. Self/Self. Doppelganger love, according to isilya. Reflexive slash, according to Cedar Librarian. Selfucking, according to Florahart. OT1, according to lizardlaugh.”
wieder, love, the list is specially for you.
What I take:
- any fics where a character’s sexual energy is directed to him(her)self: mirrors; masturbation without dreams of anybody else; sex with his/her younger/older self with the help of time-turners; any other device;
- Polyjuiced sex where a character, remaining in his own body, is having sex with anybody Polyjuced to impersonate themselves, i.e. as if with themselves.
Won’t do:
- if a character meets a Polyjuiced copy of himself but there’s no sexual affair (at least kissing);
- swapped or swapped Polyjuiced bodies, i.e. characters representing each other.

RULES
What I Take:
- fiction featuring sex with dead partners, and I don’t mean ghosts. I mean dead bodies as the word ‘necrophilia’ implies;
- variations on the theme of the Sleeping Beauty will do if a character thinks the object of his/her affection to be dead and has some sexual activity with the body that is magically asleep as with a real dead one (awakening chaste kiss doesn’t count);
- other kinds of pseudo-necrophilia fics will do, too.
Won’t do:
- relationships with ghosts, portraits or any other form of afterlife existence but corpses/dead bodies.
- vampire fiction. I was told that vampires are technically dead bodies. Yes, I agree but I’m not interested in those. If you are, check HP/SS Vampire List, compiled by Ad Baculum or Harry Potter Vampire Fic Master List by Katfusion.

Themed list: Polyjuice and bodyswap, non-sex

I decided to split this list based on whether or not people have sex while while Polyjuiced or while their bodies are swapped because some people, I believe, like the kinky scenarios the topic provides while others might be squicked by them but want to read sitcom instead, for which Polyjuice or bodyswap are a perfect device. So, pay attention to the rules and which part is which please!
RULES
What I Take:
- as this is the second list on the same theme, here I take the fics where people use
a) Polyjuice potion,
b) swap bodies;
c) happen to be in somebody else’s body because of other things
and don’t have sex in the mean time. That is, non-sexual or mostly non-sexual use of Polyjuice goes here.
- slash, gen, het - everything is accepted.
In other words, if it’s sitcom-ish rather than kinky, it goes here.
King Draco’s Code, or What I Don’t Take:
- fics where where people have sex while Polyjuiced or while their bodies are swapped; such fics go to part 1 of this list.
- NO canon uses of Polyjuice! That is, no Crabe or Goyle as girls, no Harry and Ron as Grabbe and Goyle, no Barty Crouch Jr as Moody. I’m interested in what people can invent rather than how they can fill in the blanks. This rule doesn’t apply to part 1 of this list.
- what is called “genderbending” as long as the body is the same (i.e. Hermione becomes a boy; Harry’s a girl, etc). Such fics go to the Genderbending list;
- possession doesn’t qualify. That is, when two, I dunno, souls share a body or when Voldemort or somebody else takes possession of somebody else’s body, it won’t do;
- no Polyjuiced whores or brothels. They go to the Prostitution list, part 2.
- Tonks changing her sex or changing herself into another man entirely doesn’t qualify. That’s for a Metamorphmagery list, for somebody else to make.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics that you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics that you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;

What I take:
I’m taking two types of AU but placing them into separate sections, so please tell me which kind of fic you suggest:
1. AUs where James and/or Lily survive(s) the assault on Godric’s Hollow (NOT where it never happened, but where it did and they survive).
2. Other AUs where James and/or Lily are alive (with exceptions, see below).
Pottercest fics (incest fics with the pairing James Senior/Harry or Lily (Evans)/Harry — if the latter exists) are in the separate section (to spare those who don’t want to read them) if they fit. I’ll explain what kind the fics are in Italics in fic info: if the Potters survived the attack or if there wasn’t any. If you want more Pottercest, go look in lj comm jphp_slash or James/Harry section at PSA. If you have issues with incest fics, they squick you, or you just don’t like them, simply skip section #3. Try flaming, and you’ll get a mighty kick in the arse.
King Draco’s code, or What I don’t take:
Pay attention! I’m taking only:
a) AUs where a certain change in the time-line led to James and/or Lily surviving/living, also known as “What If AUs”. I.e. Sirius was the secret keeper, Voldemort went after Longbottoms; Lily and/or James survived the attack, and other variations thereof.
b) fics where there’s a sort of parallel reality where Lily and/or James live. Dreams where it happens don’t qualify, with the exception of those where the character (usually Harry) believes them to be another reality.- No Muggle AUs, no fairy-tale AUs (however much I like Nimori’s Potterella, it won’t qualify), no fics where James and/or Lily are fairy royalty, elf kings, etc. No AU of other kinds. No fics set in other ‘verses than HP.
- No James/Harry PWPs that contain only sex or mostly sex without a decent chunk of the Alternate Universe settings (how James survived, where they live, what they do, and such). The point of this list is not to show in how many ways or how exactly James could fuck Harry if he survived and if they were into incest, but to show their life.
- no Pottercest fics of other types than AU that flows out of a changed event in the past. I mean, no ghost!James, no “Harry travels back in time and meets James” (or James travels forward).
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written; I’d also prefer no abandoned WIPs that don’t show most of the story.
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics that you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics that you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no decent grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are; what kind of AU it is (was there an attack or not, etc). You’ll spare me hours of rushed reading!

Alternate dimensions in Harry fics
What I take:
- dimensional travel or fics where parallel/alternate dimensions co-exist. I.e. our hero travels not to the past or future but to another dimension within the same time frame as their own (usually). For example, A Slytherin in Gryffindor Clothing (see below).
- they must be the alternate dimensions of the same HP reality! Only the same reality. No newly invented places.
- I can’t emphasise it enough: the character has to travel to another reality. If not travel, then we need to see both words in the fic.
- multiple dimension fics, like The Pendulum of Choice.
- stories where the hero wakes up in a mental hospital, thinking that his world is all in his head — often written after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode based on this concept. Such stories fit if the two realities are shown as equal and we do not know which one is real, like in Oscillate Wildly.
King Draco’s Code, or What I don’t take:
- no time travel. If the hero just travels to another time, it goes to the Time travel list.
- NB! no fics where the hero travels to a non-Harry reality, such as Discworld, Middle Earth, and so on.
- NO simple AU fics (i.e. the fics the entirety of which shows a different reality — see travel above).
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written; I’d also prefer no abandoned WIPs that don’t show most of the story.
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics that you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics that you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no decent grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;

Themed list: Voldemort wins

Today’s theme Voldemort wins, for curia_regis.
What I take:
- only the fics where Voldemort actually won, even if only for a while. That means that he and his Death Eaters rule the country or the world. There should be some sense of finality in their victory.
- I’ll accept fics where Voldemort was killed but Death Eaters rule (if there are such)
In other words, I want to see either how he wins or how he rearranges the world according to his ideas.

- no fics where Harry is captured (tortured, held captive etc) but the war keeps going on.
- no fics where Voldemort wins at the very end of a long fic.
- no short PWPs written for the sake of kink, where Voldemort’s victory is implied.

Themed list: Memory Charms

This is the list of fics where Memory Charms are used, for the wonderful Quilt_Stitcher.
I should forewarn you that my placing a fic on this list might be a spoiler. Tread with caution.
What I take:
- fics where Memory Charms are used (someone is Obliviated); mind that it must be an important part of the fic. If the use of Memory Charms is just a passing mention, such a fic won’t qualify.
- fics that describe the consequences of the use of Memory Charms.
- fics that describe an Obliviator’s job, outside of canon cases.
- if a fic shows us Lockhart’s memory loss after the spell that he had tried to cast on Ron and Harry misfired in great many detail, such a fic qualifies. I wouldn’t want to take here all the possible Lockhart fics though. Btw, have a look at Lockhart Slash Masterlist, if you are a fan of his.
- if a potion is used to the same effect as a Memory Charm, like in Amanuensis’s Hypocritic Oath, it qualifies.
King Draco’s code (what I don’t take):
- please, no canon uses of Memory Charms;
- no amnesia fics where memory loss has occurred because of other things. Such fics go to the amnesia section of the Disability fics list.
- if memory loss occurred because of a spell or potion accident (i.e. unintentionally causing somebody to lose memory), such fics also go to the Disability list.

- no drabbles;

Here is list of fics featuring Dark Lord Harry (Severus, Lucius, etc). This list is for the wonderful meri_oddities who wrote an absolutely wonderful, charming story Courtship Rituals for my “Snape pursues Harry” challenge. You can find all responses to the challenge here.
In the cases of certain fics, my putting them on this list is a spoiler because it reveals their main plot twist. Be warned and proceed with caution!
What I take:
- fics where Harry, Lucius or anyone else (except Voldemort) becomes a dark lord. This means that a character has not only gone dark, but also has the means (preferably official) to implement his/her wishes and policies, nation-wide. Pay attention to “King Draco’s code” below.

- neither a character’s dabbing in Dark magic nor their official position of power are sufficient if taken separately. Harry’s gone dark but he doesn’t rule wizarding Britain? Nope, not enough. Ginny has become the Minister and abuses her power, but she doesn’t practise Dark magic? Nope, not enough either. It means that Maya’s Your Every Wish, for example, doesn’t qualify.
- fics where Voldemort possesses somebody and they rule together go to the Voldemort possesses somebody’s body list, not here.
