Themed list: Shakespearean HP fics

Shakespearean HP fics, for the incredible, adorable, dearly loved Isiscolo. Happy belated birthday! I hope you’ll find here something you haven’t read and that you’ll like.

RULES

What I take:

- X-overs with and cover-versions of Shakespeare’s works;
- stories inspired by Shakespeare’s works when the original can be traced in the fic [relatively] easily;
- stories where HP characters make stage performances of Shakespeare’s plays;
- if it’s a fic based on a sonnet, it should be more than just a couple of quotations; the whole fic should be the interpretation of the sonnet.
In other words, I take stories where the characters of HP-verse can (this way or that) act as Shakespearean characters or in Shakespearean situations.

King Draco’s code, or Big No-Nos:

- no Draco/Ginny, Harry/Pansy (or anything else, and particularly no Draco/OFC) based on Romeo and Juliet. There are dozens of them, inpired by Leonardo di Caprio’s smile;
- no WIP rule is on today. I’ll accept a WIP only if it’s more than halfway through and the updates are regular;
- if a character reads/recites some Shakespeare, it’s not enough;
- a Shakespeare’s line in the title or epigraph is not enough either;
- pretty please, no silly parodies based on “To be or not to be” monologue;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d appreciate the following info: author, title, what Shakespeare’s work the fic ‘covers’ and in which way; pairing, rating, WIP status

Themed list: detective HP fics

This list is for Geoviki. Go read her fabulous story A Thousand Beautiful Things!

Detective fics in HP fandom

RULES

What I take:
- the main thing in a detective story is investigation. I’m asking you to take into consideration the following:
- an investigation should be either conducted by the authorities/organisations/any figure of authority/person in charge and/or be thought of as *investigation* by those who carry it and/or the fic should feature handwriting/blood/hair/etc analysis and systematic compilation of evidence aimed to reach, eventually, a suspect;
- a story can be entirely detective, but also it can be action/adventure or mystery with a strong detective element;
- crossovers with the classics of the detective genre such as stories about Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Cristie’s fiction fit automatically.

Themed list: genderbending

Posted on May 17, 2008

Here is the list of gender-bending HP fics, for Iulia Linnea.

RULES:

What I take:

- I was corrected while looking for the fics that I should have used the word “sex” instead of “gender.” That’s quite right. I’m interested in the fics that feature sex change here. But, since it somehow has already stabilised in fandom that the fics I mean are called “genderbending” or “genderfuck”, I’ll leave the title be.
- I take fics where a character’s sex is changed a) as a result of a spell/potion, be it accidentally or intentionally; in such a case the change should not be just a minor detail but be significant for the fic; b) by the author, i.e. AU fics where, for example, Harry is a girl (they will be marked AU on the list.) Mind that in any case the character(s) in question must be of the opposite sex, even if only for a while, not just *seem* to be. So, fics like The Perfect Wife, by LinW (Nesting Hedwig) go to the x-dressing list rather than here.
- where a character is a hermaphrodite.
- note that the point of this list is that a character’s sex changes while he/she remains in the same person’s body. It means no Polyjuice.

King Draco’s Code, or What I don’t take:

- no cross-dressing fics or other gender exploration or experimentation. They go to the cross-dressing list.
- do not mix gender-switching fics with body-switching. While the sex of a character might be changed during body switch if they were a man and a woman, those fics are not the focus of this list. If you are interested in them, you might want to check the list of recs of body-switch and gender-switch rec list, compiled by Ignited or my own list of Polyjuiced and bodyswap sex.
- somebody Polyjuicing themselves into a person of the other sex doesn’t qualify;
- Tonks changing her sex doesn’t count;
- Blaise, whether a boy or a girl in a certain fic, doesn’t count due to the fandom confusion about him that lasted so long;
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, whose sex is changed, what the pairings and the rating are. Read more

Themed list: Animals

As a present for Ntamara’s birthday, this is an innocent brother to Ntamara’s Mater List of Bestiality Fiction in Harry Fandom.

Animals in HP fanfiction (non-bestiality)

RULES

What I take:

I’m interested in animals: animals’ POV, animals’ behaviour, interactions between human and animal.
- stories where non-canon pets play an important part. For example, if the main character owns a cat or a dog (fish, rabbit, whatever) and this pet is actually present in the plot, not just mentioned, such a fic fits.
- stories where canon pets interact mostly with somebody other than their canon owner or where their part is significant and differs from canon. For example, if Hermione’s cat Crookshanks is very attracted to Harry.
- non-canon Animagi, which includes any known Animagus (i.e. Professor McGonagall, Sirius Black, Rita Skeeter, Peter Pedigrew, James Potter) as any other animal than what they are in canon;
- any other character as an Animagus;
- non-Animagi transformation into animals. If Draco Malfoy gets stuck as the unfortunate ferret, it fits. However there’s a HUGE number of fics of this type, and the risk of coming across a bad!fic is too high so I will be picky.
- canon magical creatures only if they play some special part that wasn’t written in the books (like Buckbeak’s part in Sirius’ escape). For example, if Luna befriends a Thestral and together they save Ron etc, it will fit.
- Charlie’s work with dragons or the life of a dragon reserve fits only if it’s shown in great many detail.

What doesn’t fit:

- canon magical creatures if they play the same part (even if their role is expanded) they had in the books;
- canon Animagi;
- bestiality stories. If you have doubts whether a fic contains bestiality or not, err on the side of caution.
- centaurs or werewolves don’t fit; firstly, they are not animals in my opinion, secondly, half the fics with Remus would fit otherwise and we would drown in them.
- if an Animagus transformation is mentioned but there are no details (like in Amanuensis’s No Happy Memories), that won’t do.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d appreciate the following info: author, title, pairing, rating, WIP status; how the fic fits here.

Themed lists compiled by others

A couple of words first

Please, don’t ask me to re-make some of these lists because I’d “do it better.” Because, it’s impolite at best.

I don’t know whether they are updated regularly or not and which of them are. But in any case there are lots of fics on each of these lists. I don’t include here the attempts of themed lists that didn’t collect a lot of fics.

All these lists have different structures, but usually the compilers explain their rules.

Themed list: Parseltongue and Parselsmut

Posted on March 2, 2008
Filed Under HP themed lists | 3 Comments

This list is for Lazlet because she’s fantastic.

Parseltongue and Parselsmut

RULES

What I take:

- fics where Parseltongue is used a) extensively, b) originally, c) in sex. If they weren’t posted to hd_parseltongue.
- fics where somebody besides Harry, Voldemort, and Gaunts can speak Parseltongue, for whatever use.
- fics where Harry’s talking to snakes is a requirement of his job or business (like in Tayefeth’s Snakes and Ladders).

King Draco’s Code, or What I don’t take:

- no fics where Harry and Voldemort chat in Parseltongue as they would do, say, in French.
- no fics where Harry has a pet snake (or just a friendly snake), i.e. where Paseltongue is used for communications with snakes and nothing else. Such a fic would qualify, though, if Harry’s speaking Parseltongue to snakes arouses somebody else, that is if Parseltongue is a kink.
- no fics where Parseltongue is used but it’s insignificant for the fic as a whole, as in, Harry says two-three phrases to open a door. Once again, the use of Parseltongue should be significant.
- no fics from hd_parseltongue; I just don’t want to multiply things without necessity. You can simply go there and read fics to your heart’s delight.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are. If you tell me a little about how Parseltongue is used, I’ll be really grateful.

Themed list: Defeat Voldie 101

Posted on February 28, 2008
Filed Under HP themed lists | 2 Comments

This is a very spoilery list. Even the fact that a fic is put here may be a spoiler. Be warned! Also, the majority of the fics here were written before DH, understandably. So don’t expect lots of DH-compliant fics.

I’d like to express my gratitude to Dita P for her help in collecting fics for this list! Thank you, dear!

RULES

What I take:

- Since Voldemort is defeated in every third Harry fic, only the fics that show really original ways of defeating Voldemort are accepted. It means that even if something may be considered original within a certain fic but similar things were done in Harry fiction several (many) times, I won’t accept it.
- The way of killing/defeating Voldemort must be shown in a very detailed way, either with a deep theoretical base or showing us the spell/potion/combat tactics development and how it works, or both.

King Draco’s code, or What I don’t take:

- no fairy tale or some-other-(non-Harry)-verse AU fics. But I’ll take an AU fic of “Severitus’ type”, of “Harry’s parents survived” type, etc. In other words, I’ll accept AUs that don’t incorporate strange details in Harry-verse.
- no fics where the defeat of Voldemort is mentioned in passing. If we don’t see how it was done in detail, the fic doesn’t qualify.
- no fics where the means of destroying Voldemort look like Deus ex machina. As in, Harry and his new friend Miranda find a super-hyper-powerful sword/ amulet/ ring/ book and voila, all the problems are solved. I’m well acquainted with the ways the minds of many young fanfic writers from FF net work, i.e. without any consideration of canon but with the wildest flights of fantasy. So I will take such a fic only if it’s exceptionally well-written and plausible. And not if the author in their unrestrained fancy made up something so original that it better be called ridiculous.
- here are the sub-types of the scenario that aren’t considered original:
a) the duel Harry vs Voldemort, unless the spells Harry uses are developed by the author with great creativity and in the tiniest details.
b) the same about Harry duelling/ spellcasting with somebody else’s help, unless we can see the detailed development of an original spell.
c) Occlumency/Legilimency, unless the author shows us the mechanics in a very detailed way, or if there are some unusual aspects of it involved.
d) bonds that amplify the combatants’ power (as in, Snape and Harry (Draco and Harry etc) form a soul/ mind/ blood bond that allows them to combine their powers to defeat Voldemort, etc.).
e) since defeating Voldemort “Muggle way” is a rather frequent plot, I’ll accept only the fics where this way is very well-grounded and well-written or where it’s really unusual.
f) I’m not taking any more fics where Voldemort is defeated in a ridiculous way. There are two or three of them here, and that’s quite enough for me.
- no possession scenarios even if the way Voldemort is killed is original. They all go to the possession list.
- no time-travel scenarios where somebody goes back in time to undo or change something to help defeating Voldemort; they all go to the time-travel list.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written.
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d appreciate the following info: author, title, pairing, rating, WIP status; how Voldemort is defeated and why it’s original.

A How To Guide: themed lists

Posted on February 28, 2008
Filed Under HP themed lists | 2 Comments

Preface

When I was a bit more active in searching for fics, I was asked to make a list on this or that topic rather often. And when I was asked, I sometimes refused — because I’m here having fun rather than fulfilling wishes, or fulfilling wishes only when it’s fun for me too. So when I wasn’t interested in the suggested theme, I often replied, “Why don’t you do it yourself?” To which I often got the answer like, “Nobody knows me, so I won’t collect as many fics as you will” or “But I don’t know fandom as well as you do,” or something else along these lines.

Firstly, such attitude never got anybody far. If you want something, you better work for it ‘cos expecting things to appear out of thin air on a golden platter just because you want them is, let’s put it mildly, unrealistic.

I’m perfectly aware that when one has fof-list about a thousand people, it’s much easier to get questions answered or to get help at all than when there are only two close friends that read your journal. But at the same time, I think it’s an excuse, not a real problem. When I made my first list, I was a very green but curious newbie with a small friend-list, about 20 people on which were mutual. What do you need? A bit of enthusiasm, really.

So here is some helpful advice and a “How To guide” for those who’d possibly like to do it but are reluctant because of this and that. Spend some time on it, and you’ll have your own corner made as *you* want of the things that *you* find interesting. You’ll like it, promise :) Lanta and lira_snape have done so, and I bet they like it. And when you have something to offer people, they will come, use it, and like what you do too. But be ready to work for it. It’s a pleasant kind of work, really, not like mucking stables!

How to compile and maintain a themed list
for your pleasure and for other people to use

1. So there’s a topic/theme/plot you like.

Consider this: have you seen many fics with this plot/theme? Is it a popular theme? I mean, are there many people who like to write and read about it or are there just a few? If it seems to you that it’s not a popular plot, don’t give up — it just means that it’s a bit harder to search for it. It’s much worse if a plot/theme is too popular. Say, I don’t think it’s possible for one person to compile and maintain a list of fics featuring heterosexual marriage; there are just too many of them! So, use your logic and reader’s experience. Think if you want to limit it to certain pairings or make it general. I am, for instance, a non-OTP kind of reader, so I don’t limit my searches with one pairing. You might be quite different. Themed list: Harry, rescued

Posted on February 27, 2008
Filed Under HP themed lists | 19 Comments

This is the list of fics where Somebody rescues Harry from the Dursleys, for Accioslash.

Usually I don’t make single-scenario based searches, but I’m ready to make an exception in this case. Firstly, what Accioslash wants, she gets :) And secondly, there are lots of fics with this scenario, so I guess the number deserves a separate list.

RULES

What I take:

- fics where anybody (Snape, Lupin, Tonks, Puss-in-Boots, whoever) comes and takes Harry from the Dursleys. Harry might be kept in a locked room, beaten, abused, raped, or he might be just unhappy - it doesn’t matter as long as it’s perceived as a rescue.
- slash, gen, het, anything.

King Draco’s code, or: What I don’t take:

- Harry should be actually rescued from the Dursleys. If he was visited but not taken away, if he run away on his own, if he was found in the street, it doesn’t qualify.
- the rescue operations we have seen in canon don’t count;
- big fat Nota Bene: speaking from bitter experience, the problem with some fics on this list is going to be the truly horrible way of how they are written. So I’m asking you to not bring fics where the author absolutely can’t cope with grammar and spelling. I realise that some people are less literate than others. But if the author doesn’t know that there are such things as commas, there’s a chance that I won’t take that fic. I’m tolerant enough in this respect, not being a native speaker myself, so if I am squicked with grammar, it’s usually saying something.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, who rescues Harry, and what the pairing(s) is/are.

Themed list: autoerotic HP fiction

Posted on February 27, 2008
Filed Under HP themed lists | Leave a Comment

So, I pretend to be academic and call it autoerotic fiction. Borrowing definitions from McTabby, it’s also known as: “Selfslash. Self/Self. Doppelganger love, according to isilya. Reflexive slash, according to Cedar Librarian. Selfucking, according to Florahart. OT1, according to lizardlaugh.”

wieder, love, the list is specially for you.

RULES

What I take:

- any fics where a character’s sexual energy is directed to him(her)self: mirrors; masturbation without dreams of anybody else; sex with his/her younger/older self with the help of time-turners; any other device;
- Polyjuiced sex where a character, remaining in his own body, is having sex with anybody Polyjuced to impersonate themselves, i.e. as if with themselves.

Won’t do:

- if a character meets a Polyjuiced copy of himself but there’s no sexual affair (at least kissing);
- swapped or swapped Polyjuiced bodies, i.e. characters representing each other.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are.
