Detective fics in HP fandom
What I take:
- the main thing in a detective story is investigation. I’m asking you to take into consideration the following:
- an investigation should be either conducted by the authorities/organisations/any figure of authority/person in charge and/or be thought of as *investigation* by those who carry it and/or the fic should feature handwriting/blood/hair/etc analysis and systematic compilation of evidence aimed to reach, eventually, a suspect;
- a story can be entirely detective, but also it can be action/adventure or mystery with a strong detective element;
- crossovers with the classics of the detective genre such as stories about Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Cristie’s fiction fit automatically.
Won’t do:
- kids (for ex. Harry, Ron, and Hermione) playing ‘investigators’ like they did trying to figure out who Nicolas Flammel was in PS;
- someone just pondering over the secrets of somebody/something.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written; I’d also prefer no abandoned WIPs that don’t show most of the story.
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics that you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics that you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no decent grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are. You’ll spare me hours of rushed reading! If you are unsure about a certain fic, describe it in some detail and ask.
Stories are sorted by TITLE in alphabetical order, excluding articles.
Special marks:
# - liked
## - loved
NR - have not read
new - added in the last month or so
** - stands for not entirely detective fics but where detective elements are nevertheless strong enough to put the story on the list.

Crossover with Sherlock Holmes
‘Sherlock Holmes and the Ravenclaw Codex’
www.fanfiction.net/s/3991385/1/Sherlock_Holmes_and_the_Ravenclaw_Codex
Author’s summary ‘A Sherlock Holmes mystery set in Victorian Hogwarts. A valuable artefact has been stolen from Hogwarts School, with a Muggle student the only suspect, and Headmaster Black summons Holmes to retrieve it. But the case is not as clear cut as it first appears’
Both are complete
I also have vague memories of a story based on ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ - which I think was a Lupin/Snape fest story that included Pansy as a disgruntled housekeeper - but I can’t remember the title
Julia
Thank you!
The story I couldn’t remeber yesterday is ‘The Hounding of the Baskervilles’ by bronze-ribbons - it’s posted on her livejournal and insanejournal accounts, at Skyhawke and in the snupin_santa archive. I assume it’s also on Moonshadow though I haven’t checked
Summary from insanejournal:

For:almost_clara, for snupin_santa 2006. She requested “a ripping yarn, please, suitable for reading by the fire, with the rain lashing the windows and a plate of hot, buttered teacakes to hand. . .think Hound of the Baskervilles, the Great Grimpen Mire.” She also indicated that “vigorous/sparkly/outspoken/awkward Tonks/Black/McGonagall/house elves/squid” would not be unwelcome.
Borrowings and allusions: J. K. Rowling, Arthur Conan Doyle, A. A. Milne, Dorothy L. Sayers, Monty Python, Jane Austen, P. G. Wodehouse, Terry Pratchett, John Fletcher, busaikko, and almost_clara herself. The resemblance to almost_clara’s list of interests is not coincidental (you have no idea how near I was to committing Luna/Yoda).
Summary: Sinister games are afoot in Devon. Can Snape, Lupin, and Tonks detect who’s playing before it’s too late?
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Non-graphic hints/mentions of suicide, incest, adultery, and cross-generational intimate relations
Total wordcount: 18,500+
