A fair warning: I’ve been out of HP fandom for quite a while by now. As I read HP fiction nearly not at all nowadays, please don’t expect these listings of mine to be kept up to date. If you report a broken link or suggest a new addition, I might fix/add it… in half a year. So please don’t use these lists as a proper gateway but rather as a general guidance for what to look in other places if you find a dead end here. For new stuff, check comments.
This is the list of fics where Somebody rescues Harry from the Dursleys, for Accioslash.
Usually I don’t make single-scenario based searches, but I’m ready to make an exception in this case. Firstly, what Accioslash wants, she gets :) And secondly, there are lots of fics with this scenario, so I guess the number deserves a separate list.
What I take:
- fics where anybody (Snape, Lupin, Tonks, Puss-in-Boots, whoever) comes and takes Harry from the Dursleys. Harry might be kept in a locked room, beaten, abused, raped, or he might be just unhappy - it doesn’t matter as long as it’s perceived as a rescue.
- slash, gen, het, anything.
King Draco’s code, or: What I don’t take:
- Harry should be actually rescued from the Dursleys. If he was visited but not taken away, if he run away on his own, if he was found in the street, it doesn’t qualify.
- the rescue operations we have seen in canon don’t count;
- big fat Nota Bene: speaking from bitter experience, the problem with some fics on this list is going to be the truly horrible way in which they are written. So I’m asking you to not bring fics where the author absolutely can’t cope with grammar and spelling. I realise that some people are less literate than others. But if the author doesn’t know that there are such things as commas, there’s a chance that I won’t take that fic. I’m tolerant enough in this respect, not being a native speaker myself, so if I the grammar horrifies me, it’s usually saying something.

Vernon/Harry, NC-17, short. Warnings: underage abuse, rape. Summary: “Uncle Vernon finally finds the way to make Harry pay up for everything.” One of Vernon’s co-workers goads him into sexually abusing Harry, and then selling his services to the co-worker and his friends. Snape saves Harry.

Gen (?), PG-13, novel-length. Summary: “Lily hid a secret from everyone…except her twin brother. Animagus, Quidditch, rivalries, and discoveries all included in this answer to Severitus’ challenge.” Snape rescues Harry.

Gen; G, novella. Summary: “A very young Harry meets a man with light brown hair who starts talking about magic to him. Who is he and why does Harry feel like he knows him?” Remus does the rescuing in this one. Has an alternate ending.

PG-13, novel-length. Summary: Bill is a contact for spies overseas, and sends the information they gather in coded messages. Draco is Bill’s code breaker, and he’s back in England for seventh year, but there are a lot of surprises in store for him, like the niece he never knew he had. Now, he finds himself opposing the Dark Lord, in the process of getting disowned (the paper work takes forever to go through), rescuing Harry from his relatives in a convertible, getting captured by Death Eaters, and meeting, very briefly, one Sirius Black, who comes back to life. He is also discovering exactly what having friends is like. Luckily, Bill will be there for him, and no, it is NOT slash for those of you who are wondering.

Curing Nightmares, by diagonalist
Harry/Snape; NC-17; one-shot. Summary: HPchanslash challenge #85: Snape is assigned to observe Harry’s sleeping habits one summer to cure his insomnia and curb his nightmares. Unfortunately for Harry he seems to have more erotic dreams than nightmares that end up being observed as time passes. Snape however is acting oblivious and pretends to think them nightmares that he should soothe. Ordering supervised hot baths after ‘calming potions’ that leave him woozy enough to need much help with thorough massages to follow.

Saving Harry, by The Seeker NR
Harry/Ginny, R, long. Warning: violence. Summary: What if JKR had never intended the Harry Potter series to be for children? How would Harry’s time at the Dursleys been written? This story focuses on the years Harry lived in the cupboard under the stairs at number four Privet Drive, as well as his first appearance at Hogwarts. The treatment he receives during his decade there is not described in fairy tale terms. The boy who initially develops is not the Harry Potter we know. The story is liberally AU, with different personality traits, events, and relationships used to reflect the changes in this very different Harry and the environment in which he grew up. In the end, through the assistance of a certain redheaded young lady, Harry ultimately finds the life he should have had and rediscovers the qualities he always had inside of him. While I am not a psychologist or child development expert, the symptoms, actions, and behaviors portrayed reflect the realities of child abuse. Appropriate disclosures will be contained in the Author’s Notes above the chapter when warranted.

Someone to Watch Over Me, by SirenPrincess
Snape/Harry, NC-17, one-shot. Warnings: This story has multiple mentions of previous child abuse. The details are left vague, but don’t read this story if that’s going to upset you. Also, Dumbledore may not seem too nice after you read this story. Summary: Harry is too wrapped up in his own pain to notice that there has always been someone protecting him. Severus is hurting, too, but he feels compelled to help Harry.

Just an FYI: I see that you have ‘Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets’ as an NR.
I tried to read it and couldn’t get through the first chapter.
The spelling & grammatical mistakes are bad enough. the Canon errors are glaring.
And her version of abuse is to have Harry at 40 pounds underweight. The average 12 year old weighs in at 40-50 pounds.
It’s horribly written and not worthy of your list.
I read Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets. I very much enjoyed it. At 40 lbs a 12 year old would definately be underweight. One of my friends weighed 98 lbs and she was one of the smallest in our year. Shaldana must be thinking of kilos. Anyway, include anything YOU think is worth reading. (Though I wouldn’t mind seeing some more stories were old Voldie rescues Harry.)

I’m flattered that you include my story, “Getting Harry Back”. May I submit a correction? While perfectly understandable that you call it a “discontinued WIP”, it is, in fact, not.
Since I last submitted in August 2006, many things happened, including a serious Traumatic Brain Injury to my wife. I have, however, put together another beta-team. (My last beta team has moved on.) And I have submitted, to my new primary beta, the next two Chapters, 26 & 27. I have solid first drafts through Chapter 33, as well as the final Chapter, which I expect will be about Chapter 36 or so. I hope, by August 2008, to be posting about a chapter a month, given my more limited time for fanfic-ing.

I just wanted to let you know, that while looking through your list the story ‘What Do We Do Now’ by ‘momma-dar’ has been completed.
Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets has a sequel ( http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3875437/1/Jamie_Snape_and_the_Prisoner_of_Azkaban ) Its only two chapters and the author hasn’t updated it since last November. Also, the only serious cannon error in Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets is the fact that the Snapes are a wizarding family. The only other cannon error in it is that Draco’s parents are abusive towards Draco. Also, since all the stories on this list are all alternate universe (some more so then others), I personally think putting a cannon error warning is not needed since there are a few other stories I’ve read that were written after Half-Blood Prince that have those two cannon errors.

I’m not sure if this fan fic counts, but After All by PissedOff Eskimo is a Harry/Draco story… the summary is: Dumbledore decides that he’s had enough of the Dursleys’ abuse and brings Harry to Hogwarts at age eight.
It’s basically compliant through to HBP (I believe some key HBP scenes are just not mentioned so it’s iffy where to place its compliance) but the story takes place throughout the summer months of each year from the time Harry is eight. Harry and Draco are made to spend time together each summer, but keep it a secret from everyone… the ending (mainly the epilogue) is weird and doesn’t have appropriate warnings (for character death and a different end pairing and mentions of rape) but besides the end, I really loved this story, it was mainly a story of Harry and Draco getting to know each other and Draco slowly coming to realize that Harry isn’t as spoiled as he thought and eventually coming to admit that he cares for Harry so I don’t know if it counts because really the rescue part happens in the first chapter (though the side effects of Harry having lived at the Dursleys’ for the first 8 years of his life are seen quite often…
