A fair warning: I’ve been out of HP fandom for quite a while by now. As I read HP fiction nearly not at all nowadays, please don’t expect these listings of mine to be kept up to date. If you report a broken link or suggest a new addition, I might fix/add it… in half a year. So please don’t use these lists as a proper gateway but rather as a general guidance for what to look in other places if you find a dead end here. For new stuff, check comments.

Sorting AUs: by character

Go to the same fics sorted in alphabetical order.

RULES

What I take:

- AU fics where Harry is sorted into Slytherin, Draco is in Hufflepuff, Snape is a Ravenclaw etc. only when we have a clear idea of where a certain character is sorted in canon. If we don’t have the necessary information, guesses don’t count.
- fics where a character asks for re-sorting and his request is answered positively.
- fics where Albus is said to come from Slytherin only if it isn’t the author’s wild guess. For example, the explanation that Albus pretends to be a Gryffindor for the sake of his reputation and it’s somehow explained and supported by ‘facts’ will suffice. And the fact that he was in Slytherin should be an important detail for the fic.

King Draco’s code:

- please, no fics written a long time ago where the author needed to place their characters somewhere and missed, so there appeared Lily in Slytherin, Molly in Hufflepuff, etc. Such things don’t count.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d appreciate the following info: author, title, pairing, rating, WIP status; who was sorted into another house and what house it is. But if you are certain about some fic but don’t remember whose it was or where to find it, just tell me, I’ll try and find it on my own.

NB: I don’t have the goal to collect *all* possible fics on the theme; it’s probably one of the most popular plots of, ahem, less good fics written by schoolchildren instead of their homework. I don’t want grammar-unfriendly fics on my list. If you are interested and ready to put up with poor language skills for the sake of plot, go browse FFnet C2 communities. Half of them collect AU stories.

His main goal in life was to leave the Dursleys’ and go to college, until Remus Lupin finds him on his seventeenth birthday and his life changes all at once.” Harry isn’t a student at Hogwarts, but because Remus and Sirius keep fighting over which house he WOULD be sorted into IF he was to be sorted, Harry is sorted into Hufflepuff by the sorting hat.

Gen; AU, chaptered fic. Summary: “When Severus Snape’s pocket is picked, he does not suspect the ramifications that cornering the would-be thief entails.” Harry is sorted in Hufflepuff but sits at the Slytherin table.

PG-13, WIP (on hiatus). Summary: “AU. Due to Lily’s choice of phrasing on the Fidelius Charm, it does not break when Voldemort attacks. With Peter on the run, nobody knows what happened to Voldemort, the Death Eaters are in disarray, and Harry Potter becomes the Boy Who Vanished.” Harry is sorted into Hufflepuff and Hermione into Ravenclaw.

Harry/Hermione, PG-13, WIP. Summary: AU - Harry is rescued from the Dursleys by the Grangers, but they first time they touch, both Harry and Hermione collapse unconscious. A Harry Hermione soul bond fic - will be romance LATER.

Gen (?), PG-13, discontinued (?) WIP. Summary: The Dursleys adopted Harry. They still don’t like him. See what a difference a name makes.

It Isn’t Easy Being a Hufflepuff, by trillium248 NR
Gen (?), PG-13, WIP. Summary: Harry defeated Voldemort at a price he doesn’t yet understand. He wasn’t certain he would survive the final battle and so wasn’t terribly concerned about any price he had to pay… But he DOES survive and he wakes up to find himself in another dimension where Neville is the boy-who-lived and Harry is… A HUFFLEPUFF!? What?

No idea about the pairings, PG-13, chaptered fic, AU. Summary: “AU OOC. A tale in which Dumbledore makes a tiny mistake that changes Harry’s life.” After Dumbledore places baby Harry on the doorstep of number 14 Privet Drive, Harry grows up very differently in “The Misplaced Potter.” Harry is sorted into Hufflepuff.

Harry/Millicent, novel-length.Warnings: Independent!Harry, Manipulative!Dumbledore, Hufflepuff!Harry. Summary:The story is AU and starts with Harry’s first visit to Diagon Alley. While it does follow the general outline of PS, it diverges from the canon considerably. This story features an attempt at credible Harry/Millicent. It will also feature a more pro-active Minerva who helps Harry within her limits, and a more intelligent, observant and socially active Harry, in place of the angsty and reclusive social-reject of the HP series. It will also feature attempts by many others, including Voldemort, and Lucius to manipulate Harry.

Luna’s Hubby, by Meteoricshipyards NR
Harry/Luna, WIP. PG-13. Summary: “7 year old Luna wants a husband, and she wants one now. With the unintended help of her befuddled father, she kidnaps Harry Potter.” As Harry had been abused by the Dursleys, the Lovegoods decide to keep him, calling him Harry Lovegood and pretending that he is a year younger than he actually is. (Written Post-HBP) Hermione and Neville request during their first year to be re-sorted to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff respectively. Harry gets to Hogwarts a year later with Luna (and Ginny) and gets sorted into Ravenclaw.

Harry/Hermione, R, novel-length, AU. Summary: “There are two things to know about Harry Potter. One: He kicks ass. Two: No one cares. Why? Because Daniel Potter is the Boy Who Lived. Book 6 compliant. Takes place in year 7.” Harry is in Ravenclaw, while his brother Daniel is in Gryffindor. Daniel is the supposed BWL.

Web of Lies: Revelations, by Star Polaris NR
PG-13, novel-length. Sequel to Web of Lies. During the summer after GoF Dumbledore has taken in a sick Harry and to hide him they pretend that Harry is Dumbledore’s 11-year old grandson Alec. When he returns to Hogwarts, he pretends to be a first-year and is resorted into Ravenclaw.

What is Right, by Emma Lipardi NR
Gen, PG-13, WIP. Summary: “Harry finds himself making a decision to give it all up just to change what has happened. What he doesn’t realize is that he gets a second chance to set it right.” Harry chooses to be sorted into Ravenclaw, when the Sorting Hat refuses to place him. This is a “re-do” fic wherein Voldemort wins and Harry goes back to his younger self in order to change things.

Harry/Snape; NC-17, one-shot. Warning: sex between underage characters, mentions of character death. Summary: “Harry finds himself shunned by the other Slytherins, except one.” This story was written for Wave X of the From Dusk till Dawn Severus Snape/Harry Potter Fuh-Q-Fest. Wave X was the ‘Not here, Not now! No magic?’ challenge. This story is therefore AU.

Eventual Harry/Snape, R, AU, WIP. Summary: Neville was named the Boy-who-lived. Harry’s mother died giving birth to him and his father blames him for her death. Snape/Harry, PG-13, ~9000 words. Summary: The Battle of Hogwarts is over, but Harry still feels responsible for its victims. Including Severus Snape, who lies in a healer-induced stasis until someone discovers a cure for the curse that entered his bloodstream with Nagini’s venom.

Harry/Hermione; PG-13, novel-length. Right after OotP Voldemort, unhappy about how everything played out, decides to change the past. After memory-charming 15-year old Harry, he sends him back in time and substitutes him for 11-year old Harry. Hermione and Dumbledore discover what has happened and to fix it, Hermione travels back as well with the help of a timeturner and maskerades as someone older, working as Charms-assistant to Flitwick. One major change at the very beginning: Harry gets sorted into Slytherin

Harry/Draco; PG, novella. A number of students are resorted at the beginning of the year, including Harry (Slytherin), Hermione (Ravenclaw), Ron (Hufflepuff), Cho (Gryffindor) and Goyle (Hufflepuff). Summary: “When Harry becomes Slytherin, everything changes. Old relationships end, new bonds are formed, and Harry becomes one of many new Defense Professors.”

Harry/Snape; NC-17, MPreg, chan. Discontinued WIP. An AU take on the Chamber of Secrets wherein Harry’s a Slytherin, Dudely attends Hogwarts, and Snape oozes sex appeal out of every pore.

This fic has people being resorted later, and in particular we learn that Hermione should have been in Slytherin - Slytherin has been badly misquoted about his views on Muggleborns - and Neville in Hufflepuff but that it was Dumbledore’s manipulations which placed them in Gryffindor.

Oh, I’ve been on an HP fiction splurge over the past few weeks, and I was overjoyed to find these lists! Thank you very much for posting them!

In any case, this list is missing a story I found about a month ago. Good story, IMHO. Here’re the stats:

I know that you have previously rejected ‘In Plain Sight’ but it is a very interesting look at the inner-workings of Slytherin and I haven’t noticed any glaring SPAG problems, although it definitely improves storytelling-wise after the first 2 or 3 chapters - maybe the Potions and Snitches version has been cleaned up from the ff.net one

I am desperate and even though this story would not normally be on this list I am hoping someone will recognize it. Potions accident. Both Harry and Draco turned into babies. Snape looks after them. Draco calls Harry baby through most of story. The boys slowly grow up. Narcissa tries to take Draco away at one point and all hell breaks loose. Harry is damaged somehow and very weak and has a hard time walking so does most of his moving around by levitation. Any help would be appreciated. On a side note I keep this website permanently bookmarked so I can read the various stories. Great list.
