Exotic locations in HP fiction. Real places.
Made in collaboration with Parlophone. Many thanks to frogslayr whose post on the theme I used and to Mimiheart and shiny_crystal for the help checking broken links!
What we take:
- We accept fics where we can see an exotic location in detail. ‘Exotic’ for this search is anything that isn’t canon locations. But only if those places are a) shown in detail, geographical or cultural, or both; b) show the spirit of the place. In other words, the place must play a significant role in the fic.
- This list is about real places. It means that the fics where an author invents a location such as Snape manor, hidden Order headquarters etc go to the possible second part later. Here go the locations that really exist, in our world.
- A fic can be put here if an exotic location is mentioned briefly only if it’s absolutely exotic, very rare, like Madagascar.
Once again: we should see the place, feel it, it should be significant! Pay close attention to the next section!
King Draco’s code, or Big No-Nos:
- Merely stating that the characters are in Istanbul or Ullan Batar will not do, if all they do is go to the supermarket and snog in front of the TV in the evenings.
- If we are told that a character spent many years in some exotic location (as in, Dark Gods in the Blood, by Hayseed: Hermione spent many years in Tibet), but we don’t see it, this won’t do.
- Receiving/sending cards, or telling that somebody travels or lives somewhere (unless very detailed), or occasional recollections of a place don’t qualify.
- An undisclosed ocean beach isn’t enough. Nor is some farm in the country - if we can’t tell where it is by description.
- No “college fics” where Harry (or any other character) goes to study in an American (Australian, Canadian, …) college or where any transfer students from a local magical school come to Hogwarts. No Durmstrang or Beauxbatons if the fic is focused on the college and not on the local life. We will accept a fic of this kind only if we consider it exceptionally good in the respect of writing and showing the location.
- No fics that mostly are written for the sake of shipping Harry (Draco, Hermione, Snape, anybody else) with OCs in local decorations. Let sleeping Mary Sue lie.
- No WIP rule is on: 1) we accept WIPs if they are more than halfway through or if they show the author’s intent of finishing them, but please no fics that have only a chapter or two written. Nobody is interested in abandoned scribbles. 2) Checking broken links and WIP status periodically, if I find an abandoned WIP (not updated for more than 1,5 years), I’ll leave it on this list ONLY if it’s considerably long. Otherwise they will be purged.
- Do not bring fics you haven’t read.
- Do not bring fics you didn’t like.
- Do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d appreciate the following info: author, title, pairing, rating, WIP status; what unusual place is shown in the fic and how detailed it is. But if you are certain about some fic but don’t remember whose it was or where to find it, just tell me, I’ll try and find it on my own.
If you want to read something we haven’t put on this list, here’s Location, Location, Location forum at Fiction Alley Park.
Stories are sorted in alphabetical order by TITLE (articles excluded, i.e. The Curse Breaker is placed under ‘C’). Locations are in the fic info, bold.
Special marks:
# - liked
## - loved
NR - have not read
new - added in the last month or so
These are NOT recs; this is just a thematic listing.
