Long fics (over 20K words)
new Aorist Subjunctive arc, by Minisinoo ##
Harry/Cedric + canon het pairings and some others; NC-17, AU. Three long novellas so far; there will be more later. Summary: Harry used a Time-turner to change his past. Cedric lived. Other key figures didn’t. How can Harry and the Order fight Voldemort now? Warnings: ADULT (Some explicit sex, slash and het themes both, also MAJOR SURPRISES. No, I won’t say what. It’s a suspense novella; where’s the suspense if you know what’s going to happen?)
I read Nature and Destiny, the first story in the arc, when it was posted, loved it, and recced it as follows:
I like when it happens that I open a fic and find myself in the middle of it, seemingly in the blink of an eye. This is what happened with this story. I can’t say I’m particularly interested in Cedric or Cedric/Harry, but I started reading, and somehow the woes of one soon-to-be-dead Hufflepuff immediately began looking like the most interesting thing in the world, and then Harry came into play, and time travel, and a clever and interesting AU that follows, and lots of suspense. And as a result, I went to bed two hours later than I had intended.
I like how this story is written — in a way that you don’t notice how. Nothing makes you stop or stumble. For me, it’s like watching a film, only in letters. Very smooth. Yes, the plot here dominates but not at the expense of characterisation. The author tells and shows exactly enough for you to understand the characters and believe in them, and even to keep thinking about them after you finish reading.
I really enjoyed this story and — rare case — am thinking of begging for the sequel. The story is completed in and of itself, but I would love to know how this AU developed afterwards.
Since then, Minisinoo wrote a couple more stories in the same arc. Gosh, it’s a lucky rare pairing if it’s got a fan like Min writing for it!
In his fifth year, Harry, seeing how life in Hogwarts under Umbridge and outside of it under the rise of Voldemort turned out, decides that if he manages to save the first senseless sacrifice, Cedric, the future will be better. Or at least it won’t be worse, right? Maybe yes, maybe no. See for yourself.
It’s brilliant stuff, guys. Perfectly balanced between action and romance, character study and AU. I don’t know another story where the author pulled off instant, sudden attraction as well as Min does here. It’s one line but it took my breath away. Which, again, proves the point: it’s not the question of cliche or plot or anything; it’s a writer and what they can do with it. All characters are written well here but I fell in love with a secondary one: Krum, who is totally awesome. Now I want to read lots of brilliant Krum fics that make him as attractive as Min did.
This story is joy. When I read beyond the first half, I looked at how many chapters were left, saw chapter titles, and then was squirming in my chair for the rest of it. Will be looking forward to the next instalment in half a year.
May Contain Nuts, by Scoradh (or here) #
Harry/George; NC-17. Summary: After Voldemort is defeated, the script for Harry’s life comes to an end. Unsure of what to do with his life, he does nothing. Only one person is on hand to show Harry that a hero is not the sum of his vanquished enemies, but he’s got problems of his own …
One of my most favourite fics from the fest. It’s pretty strange, with that strangeness that Scoradh’s fics often show. The fic is also slow and long — to fit Harry’s meaningless, disorganised life. He works in one of the most useless departments of the Ministry (fabulous!), spends his free time on pointless drifting and hanging at George’s who’s left alone in his shop after Fred’s death. They are wounded and lost, but the life goes on, and so do they. The story is sad in places but really lovely overall, and the cast of original chracters is fantastic — once again, as it often happens in Scoradh’s fics. The resolution, after the long way the characters walked to reach it, is very satisfactory. I liked its form, too :) Oh, and of course there’s wonderful magic! I simply loved the Mistletoe :)
new One Down, Two Across, by Josan []
Harry/??, NC-17, ~22300 words. Genre(s): Alternate Universe. Prompt(s): Silver and Puzzles. Summary: When is a crossword puzzle not a crossword puzzle? When it leads Harry on an adventure.
Every pairing fest features a story that has little to do with the pairing, or much less than what’s expected. Josan’s fic is it for the Snarry Games this year. It’s not really Snarry. But it’s quite delightful on its own. Harry, bored with his work as the Head of Auror division, begins receiving bits of crossword puzzle that lead him to Snape. In China, of all places. I can’t say I cared about aura healing magic or the sex/relationship or even characterisation part of the story but the original settings: locations, characters, customs are absolutely fascinating. Josan can create an amazing world from scratch and make is more vivid than real places. The tiny dragon belching from overeating hot peppers? Stole the scene and stole my heart, as I’m sure many others’ :) Interesting and unusual.
Save One Thing, by magicicada []
Harry/Dudley; PG-13. Summary byquibbler_report: “It would take something stronger than magic to make Dudley Dursley a hero.”
This is a strange story with a complicated rhythm of POVs, including the glimpses of Dudley’s perception of Harry from their childhood, Harry’s view of the last battle that goes far not as anybody could imagine, and their conflict afterwards. It’s all about magic, in a most unwonted way. You’ll see when you read, I don’t want to spoil it. The fic isn’t light, but it’s interesting and unusual.
Short(ish) fics
Cannons at Dawn, by Xylodemon (or here) #
Harry/Victor Krum; NC-17. Summary: Harry’s search for Hufflepuff’s cup takes him to a strange place, and prompts an unexpected meeting.
This is a post-HBP fic that centres around Harry’s search for Horcruxes. It’s written in a way that made me believe that Harry/Victor is the most natural and welcome pairing :) “Vartime is bad time for girls, and love,” Viktor says quietly. “But is perfect time for this.” There’s nothing romantic in this fic, but it’s somehow tender. I really liked it.
Choke On It, by Aspen (cursescar) # (locked)
Harry/? implied Harry/Draco; NC-17. Warnings: PWP, anonymous sex, perv!Harry. Notes: This was not written for a fandom audience - it was once nifty.org-bound, because I wanted to write some HP manporn, but I eventually decided it should never see the light of day, because it sucks. I’ve since edited it gently for an audience more accustomed to HP slash, but it retains a slight air of nifty.
The Chosen, by Allecto (or here) ##
Harry/Crabbe; R. “Whatever he may say, however he may treat you, remember always that you are a Slytherin. When all other houses are taken from you, you will always be one of Salazar’s chosen.”
A Cliché That Fits, by Scoradh #
Harry/Neville, NC-17. Summary: One little spell can change your life.
Gosh, I don’t even read this pairing but I gave it a try, and was completely charmed by the end. It’s not a funny fic as a whole but in places it’s really funny. It’s not romantic but it gives you a nice and warm feeling. It’s also ridiculous and sweet. And it has a fantabulous bit of magic, like I’ve never seen! I mean, good self + bad self is an old motive, but never like here. Anyway, the premise is: Neville is hospitalised and is minding his own quiet business but people react in rather strange ways when visiting him, and his doctor casts a decidedly evil glances at him. Intrigued?
Dainty Is As Dainty Does, by Eeyore9990 #
Harry/Goyle, hard R, 4600 words. Summary: Harry goes to yet another unveiling of yet another ultrafeminized sculpture of himself. He confronts the mysterious sculptor and… smut ensues. Kinks chosen: Masturbation, blindfolding, exhibitionism.
Sequel: Dainty Bites Back
Maybe it will require that you suspend your disbelief about Goyle becoming a sculptor, and a very good one at that, but I didn’t have to. We know so little about him, all of it coloured by his childhood enemies’ perception, that in my opinion, he could grow up to do anything. Eyeore made me believe in her Goyle. And how delightful is he! Just look and see. Harry/Goyle is my new favourite rare pairing now, thanks to this fic :) It’s hot and lovely, and what is more, you can imagine a future story from the picture that the author painted. Or should I say sculpted? Delightful!
Harry Potter and the Wank that Saved the World, by Eumenides #
R; AU; Harry/himself? Summary: Just a bit of silliness that derives from thoughts on Harry’s sexuality, such as it is. Tongue planted firmly in cheek.
I wouldn’t call it amazing or anything, but some bits of this ficlet are just too damn funny. In a sort of ’silly funny’ but not ’stupid’. If you see what I mean. Go read, five minutes of giggling will do you good. Hermione must know what this mysterious word means…
new Increments of One, by Florahart #
Harry/Charlie, NC-17, 14300 words. Summary: After the battle, Harry’s life goal is met. Now what? Warnings: Slightly dubious consent, mention of sex toys.
Hot and wonderfully awkward. I cried during the first half: the immediate aftermath of the battle of Hogwarts, funerals, clean-up. I really liked how it was written and how the relationship grew. The Very Serious Talk About The Episode Many Month Ago Where This Or That Might Have Happened, Or Maybe Not was awkward and moving. And the sex was wonderfully realistic, with quite a few memorable things, which is a feat in itself. I had a grin on my face at the end — but there’s nothing fluffy there. It was just lovely. Wonderful story!
Just Add Water, by Cybele #
Harry/Bill; NC-17. Summary: Harry gets pissed and loses more than his glasses. Warnings for Realism and coercion, blatant manipulation and general Guy-ness.
Metamorphosis, by Penelope_Z (also at FFnet) #
R; Harry/?? Summary: Two boys behind glass. In the absence of what is real, illusion becomes your reality.
Night Crossings, by GatewayGirl (or here) #
Regulus/Harry; PG-13. Summary: Regulus needs to tell someone what he knows. It would help if he could move outside of Potter’s dreams. Written for hp_tarot.
I understand nothing in tarot but this fic is interesting even when you are as ignorant as I am. It’s beautiful, dreamy, and clever, with a complex plot and wonderful characterisation. And really, to pull off Harry/Regulus and to make it credible is no mean feat! Their misunderstandings, the differences in their views and upbringing, the very Regulus’s existence — it all makes a fascinating story, a real pleasure to read.
The Philosophy of Paper Umbrellas, by Empathic Siren (or here) #
Bill/Harry, Charlie/Draco in background, R. Summary: Harry Potter wants Bill Weasley, but knows he can’t have him. He pines from afar, only to be forced to spend an evening with Bill as a favor to Draco Malfoy. Over pints of Stella and discourse about paper umbrellas, the evening takes a surprising turn. Warnings: Erotic spanking; a little bit of foul language.
Incredibly lovely, lighthearted and fun! Not to forget hot! I absolutely adored how Harry and Draco worked in the same firm and were friendly without becoming OOC, and Harry in this fic is utterly adorable at all. I’d call it ideal light reading; brings a smile on your face better than a Cheering Charm. Sheer delight!
Twentysomething, by Zarah (hackthis) #
Harry/Blaise (past Blaise/Draco); NC-17. Summary: A Harry Potter story in five parts about getting older, getting over it, getting over yourself, and moving the fuck on.
