Harry Potter/Ron Weasley

Fics are sorted in alphabetical order by title (articles excluded).

Long fics (over 20K words)

Damn Tornados, by Mad Maudlin (also here or here) #
R. Summary: Based on the musical “Damn Yankees.” Ron gets a chance at fame with his beloved Chudley Cannons, but what happens when he starts having second thoughts?

The Darkest Recesses of the Heart, by Auntie Mame #
Harry/Ron, NC-17. Summary: Harry disappears suddenly. Ron finds him hiding out in a small American town with a new set of friends and a new life and no memory of his old one.

This is a separate kind of story: Harry’s run away and lives in America in a gay community. I’ve read a few of them, and although on the whole it’s far not my favourite plot, I enjoy it occasionally when I like the writing. Think of Lamardeuse’s The Taste of Liberty (SS/HP, QaF xover).

I enjoyed this one, too, even despite the abundance of OCs — or maybe exactly because I liked the OCs. There are: Harry who doesn’t remember and Ron who does, a new relationship in this circumstances, a mystery/detective sub-plot that doesn’t deflate at the end, wonderfully hot sex. All are pluses, as for me. I didn’t much care for the ending ‘cos it was a bit too sentimental for my tastes (and similar to many a Ron/Harry fic I’ve read, somehow). But it’s a very enjoyable story to spend a long evening on.

One hundred stories, by Shocolate #
R, also Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione, but they are not graphic. Summary: The one hundred stories are inspired by Broke Back Mountain. Ron looks back on one hundred memories of his life with and without Harry.

I had kept it open in one of the tabs since it had been posted, read it yesterday and was blown away. I gave myself a day to let the impressions settle, then decided to go here and use the open month at crack_broom to rec a pairing I won’t sign up for.

You see “inspired by Brokeback Mountain” in the summary and probably expect an ocean of angst. But this fic doesn’t follow the plot of the film. It’s not a cross-over, more like written “in homage to.” Shocolate only uses several meaningful details from BBM and its themes.

The best thing in it, as for me, is its incredible narrative intonation. Ron tells us a story of his life-long relationship with Harry and of their families in short scenes: some mere drabbles, some ficlets, some short fics. While kaleidoscopic, it’s not disjointed; it’s linear and often continuous, when one event flows from chapter to chapter. And Ron’s voice, it’s amazing! It’s on the one hand very much *Ron* and on the other, it’s the main thing that makes the fantastic atmosphere of the story, quiet and beautiful. It’s a rare thing when the author finds a narrator’s voice that sounds just right, if not perfect.

This story evokes a whole range of emotions; it’s a fic to read when you want to have a cry and sometimes a gentle laugh, to be moved and to remember it long afterwards.

Princes of Maine, by Scoradh (or here) ##
R. Summary: Harry wakes one morning to find an abandoned baby on his doorstep. Little does he know that this is only the beginning of his most challenging adventure yet: parenthood.

Now, most of you know that I don’t really care about buddy pairings. But the worlds Scoradh creates aren’t something I’m ready to miss because of such a small thing as a pairing I don’t care about. So I started reading and got completely hooked by the third paragraph or so.

The milk was never delivered at the same time every day, and often did not arrive at all. The same thugs who terrorised the corner shop regarded trifling with the milkman and his van as more of the same. Harry was often moved to wonder if they had a personal grudge against the dairy industry. If he had a true craving for milk, he would have been irritated; as it was, he was mainly entertained. He always magically repaired the van’s slashed tires and smashed windscreens if he was around when it arrived. He didn’t realise that his actions were causing the milkman to wonder if he was suffering from hallucinations, and making him angry that he was having hallucinations about getting rocks thrown at him and not about exotic dancers from a country where clothes were lamentably scarce.

After the war, Harry sort of ran away and now lives in a really bad Muggle neighbourhood, hanging out with a gang of local gamblers. One day he finds a baby on his doorstep. Harry doesn’t know anything about babies and has rather vague ideas about the world around him at all. He tries to do his best, according to his ideas of “best” of course. Then the baby falls ill, so Harry has to contact Molly, the best specialist in baby-care he can think of. Enter Ron Weasley. I’m like Harry in my knowledge of babies, so I can’t say how realistic it is in this respect, but the story is for sure lovely and moving and amusing and just this side of absurd. Scoradh’s style is fantastic, and her set of OCs is, as always, fabulous. Lovely, interesting and very enjoyable reading!

Two Households verse, by Mad Martha (scroll down; or on LJ) #
PG to R, AU. Summary: That very first day on the Hogwarts Express, Harry shook Draco Malfoy’s hand and became a Slytherin. Ron has hated him ever since. But Harry doesn’t hate Ron …

Short fics

Checkmate universe: Checkmate, Keeper’s Snitch, Natural Magic, Earthy Pleasures, by Mad Martha #
R, AU. Summary: Hufflepuff Harry makes a rash bargain with Slytherin Ron. Also available on LJ, locked.

Close Enough, by Helenish ##
NC-17. Summary: “The war had given them all new and unexpected skills: Neville had learned how to break a man’s arm in three places, and Draco had learned kindness, and Ron, himself, had learned not to take unconsidered action. Almost.”

Helen’s writing is incredible; it’s like music. Harry/Ron is not my pairing, but I can’t help being in love with this story because the way Helen writes can make me love *any* pairing, at least while you are reading the fic.

This story is strange and somehow very real. It’s the world after the war, and Ron and his friends work as Aurors for the new Ministry. In small scenes, in everyday things, Helen shows us how they changed and how their life goes on. Among those details - Harry’s odd obsession.

The sex here isn’t awkward. The relationship is. As for the sex, it’s just real. Not perfect, without sun and stars and white-hot sparkles or anything, but with the blinking lights, which also look very real and true. It’s an excellent fic, fantastic, kind, difficult and mature.

Contrition, by breed (weatherby) []
NC-17. Warnings: character death; bad-sex; extreme violence; other disturbing things. Summary: Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer came down upon his head.

I was so shocked by this story that I wanted to never read anything by breed again. I didn’t know, however, that Breed=weatherby, so I read and enjoyed a couple of stories by the latter. Then put two and two together… and thought: you know what to do with words, don’t you?

If to say what I think about this story in one word, it will be creepy. In two: TOO creepy. It’s sick; it’s insane. Literally, too, because two protagonists suffer some mental illness after… After. That event after which it all began was such a picture that it made me whimper pathetically [again, literally] when it haunted me. Oh god, I don’t want to sell it out. Just believe me, it’s awfully disturbing. And the writing is good, naturally.

Exorcism, by Cluegirl (or here) #
NC-17. Warnings: Angst, questionable consent, breathplay, rimming, felching, and violence. Summary: Ron is different after the attack in the MoM, and Harry has to go to dire extents to try and reach his best friend before it’s too late.

new Give A Little Whistle, by reni_days #
Harry/Ron, NC-17, ~7K words. Summary: A Muggle Artifact has been badly Misused, and Ron is left with a very big problem indeed.

This fic was recced in crack_broom yesterday. I enjoyed it, so am passing on the rec.

Hot and lovely! The Harry/Ron relationship dynamics isn’t new in this story; I’ve seen it more than once going along the same vein. Spoilerish, highlight if you wish: I mean, both are in love with each other but both pretend to be just friends afraid of losing their best mate. They accidentally sleep together but keep pretending it doesn’t matter/didn’t happen, etc. But the execution here is among the best I’ve seen. The author did a really wonderful job. There’s a misused spell, lots of sex, and not a little angst. It reads effortlessly, which for me means that reni_days found a perfect flow — the one that is unnoticeable :) Leaves you feeling good at the end. Pleasant story!

It Goes Like This, by Snake Easing #
NC-17. Partly AU. Summary: This story is almost ‘three things that never happened to so-and-so’, except it’s the same thing each time–Harry and Ron play on opposing Quidditch teams. The first section is set at Hogwarts, and it’s blatantly AU, but the other two are almost plausible, given current canon. Warnings: This fic contains sex, swearing, mid-air collisions, happy endings, unhappy endings, mentions of character death, mentions of het, and clueless boys.

Like Candy From A Baby, by Scoradh (or here) #
R. Some Harry/het implied but not described, minor character het described, but not in too much detail. :) Summary: “Ron seduces Harry. Post HBP.”

The thing with Scoradh’s fics is, I suppose, that you either like her style or you don’t. If you don’t, my rec will be of no importance for you. If you do, you most likely read any weird pairing she writes and enjoy it. If you aren’t familiar with her style, maybe this fic isn’t the best one to start with; try something else of hers instead.

I love her style. I didn’t for a moment buy this flamboyantly gay, fashion whore Ron whose only kind of not-one-night-stand relationship lasts for two nights, but I lapped it all up anyway, forgetting everything for the time I needed to finish it. It’s just sheer enjoyment of how, regardless of what. I’d probably read femmeslash that I don’t read if Scoradh wrote it. And I like her low-key humour.

So yes, I really liked this story.

Making Do with Mismatched Silver, by Florahart #
Also Harry/Oliver, Ron/Lavender, NC-17. Summary: Ron and Harry have an arrangement. And then they don’t.

As for me, this is a nearly perfect relationship piece. The relationship in question is, of course, not easy and even rather fucked-up, but it’s not angst-angst-angst. I absolutely loved the characterisation here and how it shines through the characters’ speech and actions: how they are both so guys, so slow on the uptake and charming. Funny, hot, touching, wonderfully written! Sheer joy!

Naughts and Crosses, by kaalee []
Harry/Ron, NC-17, short. Summary: Ron determined to figure out who steals into his bed in the middle of the night and wakes him up with their tongue in his, er, well, you know…

Amusing, lovely, hot, and a tad absurd. No motivation for the characters’ attraction here, but you don’t necessarily need it in a story like this. The pacing is pleasant, the sex is hot. Just enjoy!

The Other Woman, by Shocolate (or here) #
NC-17. Request: Harry/Ron with lots of Hermione–either involved with them romantically or not; Hermione as the go-between during an argument. Exasperated Hermione, stubborn boys–especially in a silly way—and make-up sex. kinky sex always welcome!

Absolutely wonderful! Fantastic Ron’s voice: bewildered, clueless, and natural like breathing. Amusing, awkward and moving, told in very short sentences and mostly one-line paragraphs — and they work. Sheer pleasure to read!

Pickled Egg, by Shocolate #
Harry/Ron; NC-17, shortish. Kink: foreskin play.

This is one of the funniest stories I’ve read. I laughed, with the happy, loud, open-throated laughter that disturbs my cat and probably neighbours. The former Gryffindor guys meet in a pub after work. Of course the conversation comes to sex, and Harry says something that he probably shouldn’t have. A silly contest ensues. Go read! It’s several pages of delight and good mood.

That Day on the Hill by Moshes #
NC-17. Post-war, mild angst. Summary: Scarred from the final battle with Voldemort, Harry seeks Ron out to discuss the war and its effects on their relationship. “People talk you know, Harry. People see things - fuck, I mean, people just guess things.”

I’m ready to suspend my disbelief about the most incredible or ridiculous pairings and lap up the fics about them like a hungry puppy. But Harry/Ron isn’t one of them. It’s a difficult pairing for me to read, so I rarely like H/R fics. They must have some very special mood or approach for me to believe in the pairing. This fic is a bit angsty but also very tender and atmospheric. It’s a quiet day in the aftermath. Harry and Ron are sitting on the hill, doing some awkward talking. Such a wonderful story!

I would also recommend it to all the young writers as a master class of how to introduce past events in a dialogue, so that those who start their fics with exposition dump where they explain what happened to their characters (like, “In the last five years, Harry …” blah-blah-blah for 5 paragraphs) learn not to do it.

The Thrill of the Chase and Other Illuminating Concepts, by tout_a_coup (or at FFN, without stick-figure drawings) #
Harry/Ron, PG-13, humour, 9550 words, not DH-compliant. Warnings: rude stick figure drawings, the word ‘boner’. Summary: Harry is going to seduce Ron. Even if it kills him.

The fic was just recced in crack_broom by netbyrd: she seduced me; I clicked the link, chuckled and snorted while reading, and so passing it to you.

It’s a comedy so the style reflects the genre: light, a bit silly (in places a bit over the top but still not annoying). Harry realised he’s in love with his best friend. Now his task is to seduce him, only, as Hermione said, he has an emotional range of a teaspoon, so Harry must be really blunt. But Harry isn’t the best specialist in the matters of heart, so he makes PLANS and draws their stages in stick-figure porn. He also has brain-Hermione and brain-Ginny who give him advice and urge him on and whom he argues with. Amusing and entertaining!

Twenty Things About Harry Potter (Ravenclaw, 7th Year), Twenty Things About Ron Weasley (A Hufflepuff), and Three Untitled Moments, by Mad Martha (also here) #
PG-13, AU. Summary: Twenty things about a Ravenclaw Harry; Twenty things about a Hufflepuff Ron; Three random snippets from Ravenclaw Harry Potter’s life.

This short trilogy is utterly charming. No less charming, in fact, than Mad Martha’s longer sorting AUs (Two Households and Checkmate — see above). She takes the very restricting format of “20 things about” and shows us the AU where Harry’s a Ravenclaw and Ron is a Hufflepuff, with its significant changes from canon, with family history, and the very important character differences, all done in depth even if fragmentary. Really lovely!

Do you take recommendations for fics?

  2. painless.j on December 22nd, 2007 11:22 pm

No, generally I don’t. At least I don’t take suggestions that I rec this or that. If you want to simply point me to a favourite fic of yours, it’s fine though and always welcome :)

Well, then, here is a fic that I really liked posted on the bestmates_xmas community on LJ.

    For: trubbleclef
    From: An Anonymous Elf
    Title: Weasleys’ Wizard Weekend
    Rating: NC-17
Summary: The boys are trapped, wandless, in the storage cupboard of Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes for the weekend.
Disclaimer: JKR owns it. I just borrow it without asking, and use it for my own nefarious purposes.
Warnings: EWE, but I don’t consider that a warning. More of a selling point, really. Does extreme silliness require a warning?
Author’s Note: I tried, I really did. I wasn’t able to hit everything on your list of requests, but I hope you’ll like it anyway. Many thanks go to my beta–(you know who you are)–and to her sister, for all their help. Many thanks also to all the RL friends that sat around and brainstormed Wheezes with me when my own creativity wore out. You all rule the world.
