Long fics (stories ~ 50K words, long series and such)
Howdy, by Juxian Tang ##
PG-13. Summary: “Challenge # 83: Snape and Lupin each (separately) make a decision to adopt a child. And they’re both stubbornly determined to adopt *the same* child.”
I can’t hope to express how much I love, love, LOVE this story. I read it every half a year. It’s a perfect H/C, so lovely and moving! As for me, this is how emotional stories should be told. It’s not sappy or so sugary that one starts gagging. There are, however, minor grammar errors here and there, for which I feel I shoould warn but which never spoil my enjoyment of this story. Howdy was written long before HBP, so some details are now not canon-compatible.
Inconstant Moon, by Arionrhod (link to ch.1, then click the ‘next’ button) []
PG-13. Quote from the teaser: “The year is 1999. The war with Voldemort has been over for a year, and Remus Lupin has spent that time traveling around the world, recovering from the trauma and coming to grips with his life. A summons from Albus Dumbledore brings him back to Hogwarts to once against take up a position as Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. An offer he happily accepts, for it is time for him to deal with one of the last outstanding issues from his past - his attraction to Severus Snape.”
This is a well thought-out story. There’s a detective sub-plot with attempted murder, theft, withheld information and misanderstandings. There’s very interesting Slytherin house post-war dynamics. There’s a marvelous “locked in a room” scene. There’s a very thoroughly written Lupin in whose perspective the story is told. It allows the author to play with how much is hidden from her readers. I wouldn’t say the Lupin here is my favourite version of him because I don’t like characters in denial, wherever their denial is directed. But despite it, I enjoyed the fic.
Number Theory (Numerical), by Lydia Lovestruck []
See also Number Theory (Chronological) to read the story in date order.
Also Snape/OMC, Lupin/OMC; NC-17. Summary: The sexual history of Remus John Lupin, Lycanthrope, in 31 episodes in chronological order. Other kinks include lavage (enema), rimming, prostitution, hate crimes, minor character death, masturbation; the list goes on. Author’s Notes: Written for the Lusty Month of May challenge at pervy_werewolf.
Primary Care, by The Senjou #
R. Summary: Tensions at Hogwarts result in a bizarre accident endangering Harry Potter and disrupting the life of Severus Snape and a certain werewolf. SS/RL slight HP/DM.
The Way of the World by McKay (scribbulus_ink) #
Summary: After the war, Remus tells the wizarding world to sod off and goes to live as a Muggle, and three years later, Severus comes looking for him, wanting to know how to do the same thing.
Wicked Game by McKay (scribbulus_ink) ##
R. Summary: After returning to Hogwarts, Remus Lupin tries to establish a new life for himself — and to repair the mistakes of the past.
Medium-length fics (~15 to 50K words; stories you can read in one go but it will take some time)
Better to Copulate Than Never, by Arionrhod and McKay (scribbulus_ink) #
PG-13 to NC-17. Summary: Severus makes a change, and Remus wants to know why.
The Fever of the Bone, part 2, by Ellen Fremedon (or here) #
Past Remus/Sirius; NC-17. Summary: “Five months of full moons.”
I would call it a new ‘old school’ fic, because Ellen is a classic, isn’t she? She writes with the thoroughness of those fandom days when everything wasn’t said and written so that now the writers have to revert to tricks of different kinds to say something new. This is a long one-shot that follows two timelines: one is recent and shows us Lupin’s relationship with Snape, the other traces the past relationship with Sirius. It’s neither happy nor light, but it’s not bleak either. It’s not romantic, but in its undertones and slow, quiet scenes there’s something very real, true. Very good fic.
Lukewarm, by Juxian Tang ##
R. Summary 1: Lupin is surprized to find out that his accomodations at Hogwarts go with a bonus. 2: For someone who used to being alone, it’s sometimes very difficult to get used to being together.
Sequels: Mine (NC-17) and Out of Darkness (PG-15). All three are also at the Severus Snape FQF.
It was the fic that persuaded me that I can like and find believable a Snape/Lupin slash-fic.
Lukewarm is one of the most merciless stories I’ve read in this fandom. Not cruel, nor overly filled with violence; no rape, no torture, either physical or mental. It’s just as merciless as life can be to two lonely creatures, freaks of nature, be they those literally or metaphorically.
The epigraph reads: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish you were either cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth.
Revelation 3.15-16In the summer after OotP, Lupin has to stay in Hogwarts and occupy rooms next to Snape’s. Acute wolf’s senses make him hear and smell everything his neighbor does in his apartments. Lupin has to be an unwilling intruder on the life of the man he despises. He has to witness his everyday (and night) habits which he finds disgusting. He thinks Snape is pathetic.
And he is. Even horribly so. He grows from canon!Snape of the 5th book’s ‘Snape’s worst memory’ chapter. But, as for me, however good Snape’s characterisation is, the best thing in the story is that neither of them is pleasant or attractive. Lupin is also very non-angelic. He is neither compassionate nor sympathetic, opposite to how writers usually like representing him. He is annoyed and disgusted with what he hears; merciless in his judgement for a long time. This is how it begins and goes. Loved it!
Never More, by Stasia #
Snape/Lupin, past Lupin/Tonks mentioned, PG, 15580 words. Summary: Sometimes, it’s harder to come home than it is to leave it.
Romantic and lovely and interesting in how this world is constructed and how it’s revealed to us. I began reading and was puzzled why Snape is friends with Harry, what universe it takes place in and where it’s going. But it grabbed me, so I followed. And various interesting details started adding up until they made a full picture, one I really liked. First I thought it was simply very AU. Then I thought it was a non-magic AU. After that it seemed to be not Epilogue-compliant. But it only shows that I’m too quick to jump to conclusions. In fact, which turned to be very different from my jumping imagination, this story is DH-compliant, including epilogue, in everything except that Remus is alive. Snape is a travel-book writer who is famous for his books about various countries, excluding Britain. The story begins with Harry and Ginny sending Snape, who’d just come to them, to Bath. Meanwhile in Bath, an hotel owner Remus Lupin hears the news that a famous acerbic writer of travelling guides/reviews is coming to town. The story develops from there. It’s charming, I can’t find another word for it. Wonderful Teddy, lots of lovely details (Snape running barefoot!). Pleasure!
Nice Work, If You Can Get It, by Chazpure (or here) ##
NC-17. Summary: After the war, life goes on - perhaps not as it once did, but if they’ve survived Voldemort, Severus Snape and Remus Lupin will find some way to keep body and soul together…even if it means working together. Warnings/Kinks: slash, wanking, oral, anal, toys, mild restraints
Snape’s life after seven years in Azkaban, on a conditional parole is patently miserable. Hurt/Comfort, very nicely done; lots, and I mean LOTS of fabulous details of everyday life of Severus and Remus (separately), magically assisted masturbation among them, and what it leads to. I liked how their lives were shown in parallel, in alternating scenes. Gentle humour, prudish Severus, and their venture! Aww, I’ve never seen it done quite so realistically. Absolutely fabulous! ETA: actually, I think this story is so good that it deserves another paragraph of praise, but I’m afraid to spoil it. It’s one of the best Reversathon fics this year, as for me.
An Ordinary World, by Zillah (visionshadows) #
PG-13/light R, Remus/Tonks mentioned. Summary: The Muggle world has become the last refuge for witches and wizards. When Severus Snape finds himself in need, he finds his way to Remus Lupin’s doorstep. Warnings: het sex, beatings with classical literature, coffee metaphors.
A Sea Change By Way Of A River, by sor_bet #
Also Lupin/Tonks (not graphic), R. Warnings: drug use. Summary: Post-War, Tonks and Remus had a son but Tonks is not present in his life anymore. Severus is shocked to see Remus and said child living near Spinner’s End.
First I must admit that the ending wasn’t to my tastes. Not speaking of the actual content, I didn’t like the very kind of it which seemed cliched and too much of a hymn to fanon, besides, it’s more formalised than I like — the formality did make it amusing though. But it doesn’t really matter so much — it’s not the kind of story/plot to be spoiled by an ending. I also must admit that I really enjoyed the rest of the story.
Remus and Tonks were a lovely family with a two-year-old son Sirius James, whom they call Sijay. Everything was OK until Tonks got in the way of a curse and lost her memories of them, imagining herself to be an entirely different personage. Remus and Sijay have to leave her to give her time to recover. They find a house in a place called Spinner’s End. There are so many utterly lovely, fabulous things in this fic! Say, Snape babysits Lupin’s son. You’d say unbelievable. Nothing of the kind! Snape in this fic isn’t like what I’m used to, but I wouldn’t call him OOC; strangely, I’d say that if Snape did change after the war, I could very well imagine him like this (once again, except maybe for the ending). Several scenes made me burst out into a loud and delighted laughter (thee piggies, Snape’s description of his firecall to Narcissa). Sijay is adorable. All in all, a very pleasant story.
Skin Deep, by Sparrowhawk #
NC-17. Summary: Snape is brewing a potion for the Order. Lupin offers his help, but gets more than he bargained for.
Sequels A Lesser Light and That The Night Come.
Smoke Instead of Sunlight, by MusIgneus #
NC-17. Summary: “Actions can have unintended consequences, and not everyone is what they seem.”
I’d been watching MusIgneus’ progress with this story on LJ but missed when it was finished. No matter, I’ve read it in one file now and am very impressed. MusIgneus takes an old cliche (forced bond) and turns it upside down. Firstly, it’s Snape/Lupin, a really rare pairing for this plot. Secondly, even if we are used to its variation, as in “mate or die” scenario where Snape and Lupin get locked together on the night of the full moon and so they have to have sex for Snape to survive, here it’s Lupin who forces the bond but for completely different reasons. We are used to a nasty Snape and a poor, kind, silently suffering Lupin. Here things are far not like that. But the main characters never turn OOC, the bond doesn’t look like a cheap plot device at all, and it’s well-written. So we can read a good, engaging story that has a plot and a complicated relationships of the two main characters and those around them, and a lot of well-crafted magic. Wonderful reading!
You can also read a much more coherent rec of this fic by Regan V.
Snape and Son, by Josan (or here) ##
PG. Summary: Severus Snape discovers that he has a son.
It so happens, that Snape has a son who is a werewolf. This fic starts when the child is already at Hogwarts, but it perfectly shows the relationship between a parent and a child with strange and dangerous illness. An incredibly lovely, warm story. Knowing Josan, you can expect H/C in her fic, with a short “hurt” and long, detailed “comfort.” A variation on the same theme, much more detailed (including werewolf clans and their customs) and with the SS/OC pairing is Gift of Light.
Stand Still, by Mnemosyne_1 []
R, AU. Summary: Gift for schemingreader, for the snupin_santa fest, who requested a plotty alternative reality (non-magical) fic, set in historical period, milieu of your choice. And got: early 1800s England during the time of Jane Austen and the Napoleonic War.
The fic is hopelessly romantic; it’s a Muggle AU set at the beginning of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic War. Severus is a bastard son of a maid, Albus is the village curate who took him in. Remus is a sickly young gentleman. The fic is a bit of an apologia, Snupin style — every character gets what he deserves, according to the author, in a nice fictional way. So, spoiler ahead, highlight to read, Severus goes to the navy and quickly gets promoted to a captain, a very successful one besides. I think that such sort of AU can really be pulled off only through very precise characterisation, but while I didn’t quite see these characters as canon ones, especially Remus, who is sort of cast into a role of a romantic lady who stays at home due to his/her sickness and pines for her beloved, — I enjoyed the story. It’s memorable and vivid. The only caveat is that the ending is rather abrupt — not unresolved, but IMO it would do the fic good to have some more pages to let the reader out of it gradually. Oh, and colons and semicolons seem to be devoured in the version I read, but maybe it’s fixed in this one.
To Keep Calendars in the Absence of Time, by r_grayjoy #
Snape/Lupin, NC-17, ~17K words. Summary: Severus finds that there can be many reasons to keep track of the days, even in a place where time has no meaning.
I love the “last man on Earth” plot and I like reading afterlife fics. The two are combined in this story, which makes for pleasant, thorough, and unhurried character study. Because Snape is dead, right? So you can away with the war and action and concentrate on him. I liked the afterlife world Severus appears in, and how Lupin gets there. I can picture it all in detail in my mind’s eye, so here are my compliments to the author for it. The relationship was developed in a very believable way and the end result is nothing less than heart-warming. I’m glad I left this story for the very end of my Smutmas reading. It’s a nice closing note.
Short fics (under 15K words)
As Simple As That, by Busaikko (or here, with epilogue) ##
PG-13. An NC-17 Epilogue (locked) is linked at the bottom; mention of Remus/Tonks. Summary: When the past Severus cannot recall starts to haunt him, Eileen turns to the man who was there when she wasn’t. Warning: werewolf cliché.
Eileen tells the story of her son as she sees it — of Severus she hasn’t seen for years and doesn’t really know; in the epilogue, we observe Snape and Lupin without the filter of her perception. This fic could have failed in 20 places: at Eileen’s voice, at Snape and Lupin’s past (that gets uncovered very gradually), at the werewolf cliché the author warns for before the story (which turns out to be as not cliché as I ever seen!); the epilogue could have gone in the manner epilogues often do, meaning, being completely unnecessary or not adding anything to the story. But it never fails, not once. It’s strange and fresh and lovely. Eileen’s voice, for all its being very non-conventional and that we never heard her, seems to ring true. And the story itself, well, it shot to the top of my holiday exchange favourites like a bullet.
“You’re mad,” Severus said, still sounding defeated. I needed something sharp to prod him with.
“I know I am,” I hissed at him, drawing myself up and putting my shoulders back. “Every day of my life I tell myself so, but I never felt it more true than when I walked into St Mungo’s to fetch you out. ‘Eileen Snape,’ I said to myself, ‘you’re absolutely barking.’” I looked at him through the haze of dust. “I could have got a cat instead, you know.”
Carthage, by Scheming Reader #
R. Post-HBP, post-war, Severus exonerated but in hiding. Severus finds Remus within an inch from death and takes him in reluctantly (at first).
Severus doesn’t really like to be alone. It’s just that his life takes the shape of loneliness. So the mind used to solitude keeps a running track of analysis whether Severus is alone or takes care of an old adversary whom he stumbled upon on a deserted road. Both Snape and Lupin here are charmingly mundane and even charmingly pathetic. The tone of the story is melancholy, wistful, non-sentimental, and not overly poetic. It’s somehow very precise in words and emotions. The fic has so many perfect lines that I want to quote it all. Loved it!
The Changeling, by Arionrhod #
R. Summary: Severus steps into a fairy ring, and finds himself presented with a possibility he had never considered.
Double Happiness Masala, by Busaikko (or here) #
AU; NC-17. Summary: Two lonlinesses, many secrets, one solution? Non-magic AU, but read it anyway!
Nothing can make me more delighted than a well-done Muggle AU. Snape works in a uni. Lupin is hired to the uni computer department and is called to fix Snape’s computer.
I loved how the author made up non-magic events of the same significance that the crucial canon points such as Lupin’s lycanthropy or Snape’s involvement in DE activities. The fic is warm and lovely and very well-done on the whole. Sheer pleasure!
Enigmas, Conundrums, and Other Mysteries, by The Treacle Tart #
PG-13. Summary: Despite a history that spanned decades, Remus Lupin found he didn’t know much about the elusive Potions master.
Entertaining Angels, by Rushlight ##
G. Written for Icarus’s challenge: “Here it’s just turned cold, grey and rainy. How ’bout an atmospheric Snape-fic, where Severus is with someone you wouldn’t expect?”
Evolution, by The Treacle Tart (or here) #
NC-17. Summary: “Evolution (noun) — A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.”
After the events at the end of OotP, Remus has run away from those who “give him space to grieve” or who want to make him feel better to the only place where nobody will consider his mental state. I.e. to Snape’s lab. Thus begins evolution (see the note above). This is a marvelous story, slow and gradual. One can say that the way Snape and Lupin are written and act is somewhat cliche, but if so, this is a premium-quality cliche. Very good reading, really. I adore this fic.
The Expanding Man, by Undun #
NC-17. Implied Snape/Sirius and Remus/Sirius; Mpreg; NC-17; post OotP. Summary: Sirius Black is dead but he is still ruining Severus’ life, and Remus is in it up to his neck.
Look! I’m recommending Mpreg with all my heart. I called it ‘subtle Mpreg’ – nothing too naturalistic. It’s a subtle fic in general: many things are left off-screen, but the way it’s written shows enough to involve readers’ fantasy in co-creation. Great pleasure to read.
For Life, by McKay (scribbulus_ink) (or here) #
NC-17. Summary: Trapped together before the full moon, Remus and Severus have limited options for survival.
From the Mixed-Up Files of Lord Voldemort, by frogslayr #
NC-17. Summary: A reluctant Snape tries out experimental potions on Lupin. Sirius Black watches. Warnings: slash, fingering, public sex(?), spanking, oral sex, voyeurism, MPREG.
When Frogslayr applies her quill to writing a ridiculous and hillarious fic, I can’t imagine her not succeeding. It’s slightly absurd and odd but very, very amusing. Delightful, really.
The Ill-Made Knight, by orange_crushed #
Snape/Lupin, MWPP-era, PG-13, one-shot. AU. Summary: “The boy thought that there was something wrong with him. All throughout his life– even when he was a great man with the world at his feet– he was to feel this gap: something at the bottom of his heart of which he was aware, and ashamed, but which he did not understand.” -T.H. White
It was recced by Noorie in crack_broom so I’m stealing from her again. I started reading this fic and then forgot that I was reading. It has such a wonderful narrative rhythm! It’s almost like, I don’t know, life, not a story? One of the most natural and yet beautiful storytelling voices I’ve heard. At the same time, it’s a very unusual AU take on the late Marauder era and Voldemort’s first fall plot. Pretty amazing.
Imperfect, by Anneline #
NC-17. Summary: Snape and Lupin meet secretly during the war.
Nicked this rec somewhere, most likely from Cordelia_v’s recs in crack_broom. A very good fic featuring rather young Lupin and Snape, rich with dialogue. It fills in some blanks in canon about very important period: the last months when the Potters were living. The fic is… precise, for the lack of a better word, in all respects: characters, what they say, what they do, all the whys and hows.
The Importance of Being Moony, by Llama #
R. Written for the Master and the Wolf fest. Challenge: 107) Contrary to all the fics featuring “Snape Manor,” Snape actually does not have a home. Which is why he is forced to move into Remus’ one-bedroom cottage when Hogwarts is closed down for repairs.
In Clothes a Wantonness, by McKay (scribbulus_ink) (or here) #
Past Lupin/Tonks mentioned, NC-17. Warnings: cross-dressing and lots of it. Summary: When the Ministry refuse to believe he acted as a spy during the war, Remus Lupin is forced into hiding, choosing to spend his exile performing in a Muggle drag club while he searches for the one person who can provide evidence of his innocence: Severus Snape.
It’s awwww. It’s a pefect romance where Lupin plays a drag queen by necessity and is rescued by his dark and brooding hero. Only in the end things are turned on their head, a bit, if one can turn things on their head a bit. By all rights I shouldn’t like a fic like this — lots of cross-dressing, drag queen!Remus, considerate (although snarky) Snape and so on — but I was charmed. Even the small detail about Snape’s pre-Hogwarts family life that could have made me “huh?” in other fic, in this one made me like it all the more. Very enjoyable!
In places where nobody was meant to see, by Girl Tarte ##
G. Warning: some other hp characters are dead.
I’m always dreaming that more good, non-sappy stories where HP characters grow old would be written. It doesn’t happen often, regretfully. I’m more likely to come across a fic where two 90-year-old men go at it three times a night like teenagers or something where they gaze adoringly in each other’s eyes for 80 years — which may be all good and well but definitely not what I want to read. This story, though, is my wish fulfilment. Old (over 100) Snape and Lupin live in a tiny cottage. They lead a very ordinary, mundane life, not at all exciting. But the writing is terrific: precise, subtle, and to the point. Loved it to bits!
In Spite, by Amanuensis (or here, locked) #
NC-17. Summary: Snape isn’t any good at the hurt/comfort thing. In fact, he’s an ass.
Amanuensis did a great thing in August. She wrote a fantastic amount of really good porn for the pornish_pixies Fantasy Fest. All of those fics, as for me, were good, but I particularly liked two because they were more than just porn. In Spite, one of them, is at the same time awfully funny and sad, bitter and comforting. I’m sure everybody has read it, but I can’t miss the opportunity to express my adoration.
Jerusalem, by Busaikko #
Snape/Lupin, NC-17, 8K words. Summary: And was Jerusalem builded here, among these dark Satanic mills? (William Blake). For severity_softly’s second prompt, “Post-War AU where Remus wants to have a child; Severus has reservations.” Warning: AU, MPreg.
Really excellent use of AU and magic! This is an established relationship fic which I usually skip ‘cos I find them boring but this one is as fresh as ever and written really wonderfully. Just begin reading and one thing will lead to another, a small discovery to a clever twist of canon in this alternate universe, and I bet you’ll be as enamoured with it as I was! Magical!
Just One Little Change, by Cave Canem #
PG-13. Summary: Remus Lupin and a dinner of roast beef successfully conspire to get under Snape’s skin. Snape finally throws both caution and one of the oldest rules in the books to the winds and gets an answer to his question.
Lather, by Cluegirl (or here, locked)
NC-17; PWP. Summary: “A friendly wager between the last of the Death Eaters, and the last of the Marauders.”
A PWP, or nearly PWP. Apart from being well-written, it’s my dream come true. I wanted to see somebody wash Snape’s hair. Here it is.
A Method of Annullment, by Snegurochka Lee (also here or here) ##
NC-17. Summary: The thing about a Pensieve is that it can both mask and reveal, depending on the time of day. Memory is always a tricky one, after all: look too closely and you’ll start to doubt what you see. Warnings: Bestiality, rough sex, light bondage, mindfuckery.
These are 17-year-old Snape and Lupin but no hand-holding is in sight! The fic reminded me of Not Exactly Dickens’s The Miseducation of Severus Snape (see Rex Luscus’s rec for details) only a bit less nasty. The mindfuckery, memories, characters here are perfect, and the plot twists are mind-blowing but believable. It’s all wrong and hot and somehow seemed very much in character to me. Very refreshing and interesting reading, of the kind that I jumped up to tell my friends of immediately.
Modern Love, by immortalautumn #
Snape/Lupin, PG-13, 11,340 words. Summary: Set several years after DH, Remus and Severus are in a relationship and raising Teddy together (their timely survival of DH is not heavily featured, so let’s assume the Resurrection Fest answered all those issues). On the surface things seem wonderful, until you take in insecurity and miscommunication.
This story was recced by Noorie in crack_broom. Instead of trying to find new words or reword her rec, I’ll send you to it, only quoting a little: Snape and Lupin, all domestic, raising Teddy in post-DH. It’s not as rosy as you’d imagine, but it’s not an angstfest either. It’s about life. Real, day-to-day life, where nothing much happens by way of exciting plot twists (no duels, dementors, danger, death eaters or dragons)… yet it’s never boring. Three people making a life together, with their blindness, insecurities, wants and love.
Except for light epitithus, which I barely noticed, I enjoyed this story. It’s at the same time peaceful and engaging, lovely and intense. Wonderful reading!
The Nine Lives of Severus Snape, by The Treacle Tart (or here) []
PG-13. Summary: Severus goes exploring in his new Animagus form and finds more than he bargained for.
Of Monsters, by Nitro []
R. Summary: After James saves Severus from Wolf!Remus, Severus and Remus spend a night in the hospital wing together.
On The Life Expectancy of the Phoenix, by Anneline #
NC-17. Warnings: Drinking, drug use (sort of), public sex.
A wonderful, lovely story for grown-ups and about grown-ups. There are such stories where I sort of don’t notice what I’m reading, don’t pay attention to words until a certain line or moment stands out, as if highlighted. This story, for me, is like that. There are many lines and scenes I want to quote because they made me grin or exclaim, and I’m sure that when I read it next, there will be more lines and scenes to make me pause to enjoy them better, different ones. ‘Cos I am going to read it again later. The story spans over many years and goes back and forth; it’s slow and understated and pleasantly strange in places. I loved the tone of the narration and how the author wrote both Lupin and Snape, their younger selves as well as the older ones. I liked the details of their lives. Very pleasant reading!
One Word, Curled Like A Snake, by Thamiris #
NC-17. Summary: Snape visits Lupin and says one word for an entire night, unexpectedly placed.
Out of Bedlam, by Busaikko []
Snape/Remus; R, one-shot. Warnings: reference to madness, repression, abuse, character death. Summary: Victorian AU. Severus is in Bethlem Royal Hospital; Remus is a doctor.
Remedial Potions, by Pru (lupercali) (or here) #
PG. Summary: It was an accepted fact, something everybody knew, and knew would never change.
The Rose Petal, by Snegurochka Lee #
Snape/Lupin, Snape/Harry, NC-17, short. Warnings: Non-con, captivity. Summary: This is your best memory of him, the one that sustains you later, through all the lies.
That was beautifully written and clever! I opened the story to check if it fit in any of my themed lists and got completely caught up in it, all because of the writing. You’ll read and wonder when it’s taking place, and it will become clear later. You’ll think what the fuck is going all at all and why Harry’s doing what he’s doing. And it will become clear too, even if not as one would expect. I have my suspicions about the author because there aren’t many Snupin writers that mess with my head in this way with their writing and that make me like it.
The Skull Beneath the Skin and its sequel, Benediction, by Ellen Fremedon #
NC-17. Summary: The Dark Mark cuts deep. A werewolf understands.
The Snupin Scramble, by Violet Quill (or here, locked) #
NC-17. Summary: “Snape likes to top. So does Remus. Oh no, conflict!” Warnings: Object penetration.
I usually don’t rec PWPs because, although a very enjoyable thing they are, I rarely remember them for more than a day. It’s difficult to write a PWP that “has a character”. This one does. As for me, it’s brilliant. It’s very funny, IC and well-written. I was rolling on the floor.
Still Life, by The Treacle Tart (or here) #
PG-15. Summary: Severus Snape takes some pictures and sees things for the first time.
Snape expropriates Colin Creevey’s Muggle camera, and, slowly and gradually, taking immobile Muggle photos becomes his full-sized obsession. A misanthrope!Snape takes occasional shots and suddenly sees things he has never seen. Caught in the act of flying on a broom, eating, laughing, reading, hexing each other, motionless people gain life. He who has never paid attention to real people in real life, who has never cared about them, discovers a new world. Looking at photos gives him a chance to watch attentively and to see. And this sudden gaining of vision is shown very skillfully and subtly. The photos Snape scrutinised remained impressed in my mind. I can see them. And I can feel what he felt when watched them, I can understand it. A bow to the author – it’s a real achievement.
The next Snape’s step on his way to people is impossible of his own accord: he can see but can’t make himself approach. He is an utterly sole person, absolutely closed up, reserved and lonely. He watches people interact, he is really obsessed with it, but he can’t do the same. Time for Lupin to take part. He comes to the dungeons and, left for some time by Snape who had gone on business, discovers Snape’s new hobby. The part of the story where Lupin watches the photos is also absolutely marvelous. As is everything until the climax (and even its beginning) where Lupin finds a whole shelf of the albums with his own photos. Then, as for me, the fic goes down.
The explanation Snape delivers is too explanatory. He speaks and speaks and it’s boring. The very sex scene, shown as if in photo shots, is a tad too mechanical. Device on the surface doesn’t fit the subtlety of the previous scenes. And the very ending, the last paragraph – is so sentimental that I felt as if I was fed a year supply of sweets. So, I’d rather the story wasn’t slash or stopped at the very point where the relationship starts. BUT! It is a wonderful story. Pay attention to how Snape’s photoalbums are called. It’s a heart-squeezing detail, a perfect example of how a writer can use a detail that will cast light on the whole fic. Wonderful!
A Strong Defense, by Ellen Fremedon #
NC-17. Summary: After the battle, the survivors regroup.
Third Time’s The Charm, by Helenish #
NC-17. Summary: After a year of unexpected and ugly deaths, Muggle and otherwise, the reinstatement of the Hogsmeade curfew, and a good deal of unsettling intelligence, it had been obvious that no one would much notice Dumbledore rehiring a slightly battered werewolf.
“Especially,” Severus had said, “as he can be more or less trusted not to make a total cockup of it all.”
Thirteen Months, by Argosy # (locked)
NC-17. Summary: The Wizarding World has forgiven Snape, but Snape hasn’t forgiven the Wizarding World. And gardening.
It’s amazing how much such a short fic (~6300 words) can say. Snape lives in blessed solitude, growing plants for Hogwarts in exchange for Minerva’s leaving him alone. Once a month a messenger from the school comes to collect what he’s grown. One month instead of another terrified student, it’s Lupin who comes. And something strange begins to happen to Snape’s garden. Snape in this fic is a perfect paranoid bastard. Apart from that, he’s amazingly and wonderfully inarticulate, even in his own feelings. The fic is funny and sad at the same time, and sheer pleasure to read.
Thirteen Ways, by Sinope (eponis) ##
R. Summary: Lupin and Snape don’t have the luxury of new beginnings.
Time Under Glass, by Louise Lux (or here) []
PG-13. Summary: When they were younger Severus Snape conducted some experiments on Remus Lupin.
Un endroit secret, by Beth H (or here) #
PG-13. Challenge 230 of the Snape/Lupin Fuh-Q Fest: “Snape, Lupin, or both…become trapped in a portrait.”
We should have loved more and feared less, by Maelipstick # (locked)
NC-17. Notes: For odogoddess who requested: “Fic - set post-Marauders, pre-series (in other words, when they’re in their early 20’s). Remus is ill. Snape has to take care of him, including bathing, etc. Virgin and/or constantly horny/wanking Snape a plus. Caught wanking scene (either one) a plus. Unashamedly smutty please.
Caveat: lots of SPAG errors. But look, I’m reccing it despite the caveat. Usually when a fic has problems with SPAG, it has problems on all other levels of writing. This one does not, which surprised me a lot. This fic is good and/or really enjoyable in everything else: characterisation is pleasurable and interesting, and so is the style, and so is the plot. It’s set after school but pre-canon: Lupin has aconite poisoning and (as a result of a perfectly believable combination) Snape is the one to take care of him. It’s at the same time porny/graphic and understated in the emotional department — works wonderfully! Sex is realistic and awkward but really hot all the same. All in all, good story, just needs proofreading :) Actually, I can say even more: it’s one of my favourite Snupin Santa fics I’ve read so far this year. So please, give it a chance!
Win Some, Lose Some, by Severity Softly (or here) #
PG-13. Summary: Severus thinks having Remus as a colleague is unacceptable, especially when he can’t seem to control his feelings toward him.
This is a comedy; a perfectly light, funny, and lovely comedy. Made me laugh out loud several times. Remus is back to Hogwarts under a new Head. So is Snape. Snape is enraged and wants to boot Remus out, of course. Or does he really? The last line made me clap hands. Delightful!
Wolf Masterson in The Naughty Professor IV: Prefect’s Revenge, by Violet Quill [] (locked)
NC-17. Warnings: wanking, pornography, voyeurism of a sort. Summary: Snape has acquired a taste for a certain breed of Muggle films. Strangely, one of the young actors looks awfully familiar…
An exemplary PWP: naughty, hot, funny, and with the settings to make sure you’ll remember. Delightful.
