Epilogue generation fics

Blanket DH spoilers!.

Ted Lupin/James Potter Jr.

Bruised Like a Cherry (Ripe as a Peach), by fleshdress #
Teddy Lupin/James Potter Jr, brief mentions of other pairings, NC-17, short. Warning: underage. Summary: James is ready to move his relationship with Teddy on a step but Teddy’s not so sure.

This is a PWP but one that offers us a deep look into the characters. James, so young and vulnerable and at the same time cocky and used to getting what he wants. Teddy, wanting him and uncomfortable with it, tangled in the implications of what it might mean for his family. Wonderfully written, moving, hot, and making one think.

The Rules Of Being A Godson, by Sam Vimes (copperbadge) with illustrations by elaboration #
Teddy Lupin/James Potter Jr, PG-13, novella. Summary: Teddy Lupin never gets too close or feels too much; his godfather’s son never does anything else.

This is lovely, warm story. I read it while in London and was delighted to see a good, full-bodied story of the epilogue generation characters’ lives appear so soon. I would say more about the protagonists but I’m not willing to spoil you, so I’ll have to be vague. Could you buy it based on just my saying that it’s excellent writing? Please do!

Albus Severus/Scorpius

By the Book, by sarcasticpixie #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, PG-13, ~12,200 words. Summary: Scorpius Malfoy was thirteen when his parents divorced. He’d always known it would happen someday, but he didn’t expect it to be so bloody loud. Warning(s): Teenage erections, rampant faux-Briticisms, casual alcoholism, and an ice sculpture that may not be suitable for children.

There’s only one thing in this fic that isn’t quite to my tastes. I’ll call it Authorial Muggleness. It’s a trend I notice in AS/S fic often: despite there being HP locations and even spells in the fic, it feels as if the author can’t completely envision the everyday life of people who rely on magic rather than electric gadgets. Say, why radiators when there are heating charms? Why use napkins for wiping off food smears from your clothes when there are cleaning charms? Etc.

Other than that, the fic is quite delightful. The characters and the scenes from their family life are very vivid and amusing, and the writing is pleasantly dry. Scorpius is a bookworm Ravenclaw. His parents are divorced, his best friend is Rose Granger-Weasley, and he references everything by this or that book he has read and matches people to Muggle classics characters. He can’t match Albus Potter though but then again, he doesn’t know him all that well. It all changes when there’s a trouble in the Potter household and Rose sends Potter children to talk to Scorpius, as an expert, of a sort.

There are many funny scenes in the fic. Like this one:

“Hi, Mr. Potter,” Scorpius says, giving the Hero of the Wizarding World a small wave. “I take it you’re on the guest list for what my mother hopes will be the Wedding of the Century.”

“That I am,” Harry says, then frowns. “Can’t imagine why, though. I’m sorry, Scorpius, but until about three years ago, I thought your mother was Pansy Parkinson.”

Very entertaining, witty, and enjoyable reading!

Coda to an Epilogue: Twenty Years Later, Or The Kids Are All Right, by Maya (mistful) []
Gennish Albus/Scorpius, PG, novella.

Maya’s writing is wonderful and characters are to squee over, there’s no other word for it. I can understand why hundreds of commenters do it ‘cos I express my excitement right there together with them.

“I want to be absolutely clear on this,” Harry said. “You’re telling me that you lost my children in the sewers?”

Professor Araminta von Bosau, headmistress of Durmstrang, looked confused and distressed by how badly Harry was taking this.

The story premise seems cracky, like in many other fics of Maya’s (remember Veela Auror Harry?), but the fic itself is at the same time serious and moving and plain wonderful. Albus and Scorpius are fantastic. The last part is a bit too verbose, as for me, and the plot drowns in jokes, but the story is still wonderful. Go read!

The Game of Love, by _pinkchocolate #
Albus/Scorpius, light references to the following: Albus/OFC, Albus/OMC, Albus/Teddy, Scorpius/Rose, Scorpius/Lily; hard R, ~26K words. Summary: Love is whatever you make it to be.

This is, essentially, a coming out fic. I don’t usually like those, with all their angst, but I liked this one a lot. The author just made this world too memorable to skip. Take all these complicated family relationships: a very strained one between Draco and his wife, a sort of reversed one between Scorpius and his parents where he behaves more like an adult than them and has to play a distant relationship counsellor for them, when he doesn’t much like them as people besides. Or take Scorpius’s quiet fanboying of Harry Potter. Or Albus’s very close bond with his father. Another thing I liked a lot in this fic is that we see Harry and Draco’s generation through the eyes of their children. Do you get what I mean? In too many a next gen fic, Harry and Draco are basically the same as in a H/D fic; they sort of grab the focus of the fic. Here they are ‘boring parents’, of sorts. They aren’t the focus, they aren’t very exciting or interesting. I was thinking while reading that Draco reminds me of Lucius as seen in some H/D fics, not in details but in the principle of showing him. And without homicidal plots. Complex, interesting relationships, well fleshed-out characters, angsty and funny moments, hot first time sex. In other words, it has everything I want from a story. Wonderful!

Man’s Dwelling Place, by Sansa #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, NC-17, ~15K words. Summary: Scorpius is the lone survivor of a tragedy that cost him his family, his identity, and his past. Albus shows him a possible future for them both.

One may assume that the most popular of the epilogue generation pairings, AS/S, is an extension of H/D seeing that most writers that write it have been known to be interested in H/D. Be it so or not, the newly established AS/S part of HP fandom has been busy building itself in the last half a year. Plots, tropes, genres most suitable for the pairing have been quickly tried and decided upon: shaking hands on the train, sorted into the same house (in which one of the pair would have to go against his family tradition) or different ‘unexpected’ houses (where both would), Potter sibling rivalry and nastiness, etc. In Man’s Dwelling Place Sansa takes a step to a new territory: the story is set years after Albus and Scorpius left Hogwarts. It’s the first epilogue generation fic I’ve read where the characters are fully grown men.

There’s a tragedy and various complicated relationships hidden in the past but Scorpius doesn’t remember. He has a business of his own, building magical furniture. He lives alone, one day at a time, severely traumatised both physically and mentally. One day his quiet is broken by the appearance of a stranger who comes to order a present for his mother.

I loved how it was written! Scorpius’s anguish and vulnerability, magic, Potter family, the way the past was gradually revealed. It’s emotional without being overly dramatic or sappy, it’s gripping and intense. Just plain wonderful!

Never Trust A Slytherin, by who_la_hoop (you have to be over 18 and join the comm) #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, NC-17, ~12,500. Warning(s): Swearing, explicit sex, first time, underage (both boys are 17). Summary: Al grinned. It would be the crowning glory of his final year – the one thing that would prove, once and for all, that he was not his dad in any way, shape or form. He would seduce a Slytherin – the son of his father’s great enemy – and prove to Scorpius Malfoy his perfect trust in him. How hard could it be?

This one is all sorts of fun and lovely, and very hot. Albus has a spreadsheet of things that make him different from his father, colour-coded spreadsheet even. He has nearly a hundred items on it ticked but everybody still treats him like his father’s clone. So he “very cunningly” decides to Trust A Slytherin, for which purpose he picks the son of the person his father mistrusts most and signs his Slytherin younger sister for help. See what I said at the beginning of this rec? Yep, all of those. I have a smile on my face ‘cos I’m remembering the fic as I’m typing this rec. Very enjoyable!

Potter Shaped Malfoy, by bryoneybrynn #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, R, ~33000 words. Summary: The war’s long over but everybody still hates the Malfoys. Everyone except Al Potter, that is. Can friendship between the son of a Death Eater and the son of the Chosen One work? Can it last?

I can’t say I completely believed in the premise (that everybody still hates Malfoys, especially to such extent). Another thing that wasn’t quite to my tastes was that the story was a bit too straightforward in a couple of situations, as for me. Other than that, it’s a very enjoyable and very thorough look at the relationship that starts when the boys are first years, goes on with ups and downs (and what downs they are!) and comes to love in the end. Scorpius is wonderfully done here, that is, he’s written in so much detail and with such loving attention that he comes alive, with his vulnerability and defenses, his suffering and mistrust. I hated Albus for a while there although it was clear to me from the beginning why he did what he did. The story never becomes soppy, even though it could at many points but remains pleasantly emotional. It’s vivid and has some interesting magic that seems very fitting for JKR’s world, from my point of view. Nice longish reading!

The Road Less Traveled, by Scoradh ##
Albus/Scorpius, PG-13, novel-length. Summary: No matter how well prepared you think you are, life can always surprise you.

Love Scoradh’s writing? Love her OCs? Run, don’t walk. A plotty story, amazingly fleshed-out characters, wonderful magic — it’s all here. Plus, aren’t you hungry for the epilogue generation slash? I am. This fic is like a feast. I wouldn’t believe that people can start posting good DH-canon-compliant fics already if I hadn’t read this one. I was looking forward to each next chapter even when I was drowning in work, and it never disappointed. Wonderful story!

Sequel: Three Steps Back. Summary: It’s five years later, and all is not well… PG-13.

This is, guys? This is HAPPINESS! Brilliant stuff! If you haven’t read The Road Less Travelled, what have you been waiting for? It’s an absolutely fantastic epilogue generation fic, and now Scoradh is writing a sequel to it. Rambo Dursley (and how cool is that?) is back, and we get to see Lily who’s grown into a wonderful geek. Scorpius is aloof and mysterious and a denial queen, and Albus got a Very Serious Teenage Problem but didn’t lose his level-headedness in everything else.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to read Three Steps Back without having read The Road Less Travelled, but anyway, run, don’t walk! It’s a WIP but Scoradh updates like a clock.

The Rules of Malfoy Manor, by medraxellion #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, hint of H/D, R (I’d say PG-13), short. Summary: The ten rules the Malfoys have established since the birth of Scorpius.

This fic is not without an occasional error but it’s very amusing. When Scorpius is still a small child, Draco Malfoy comes up with the idea of written rules for their house. As time goes by, various family members add to the list with the rules concerning various other family members, which they then follow, very properly and diligently. I laughed at peacocks that kept appearing.

There were a number of things that were never to be spoken of in the Malfoy family home. After a brilliant spectacle of seven-year-old Scorpius Malfoy asking of his Grandfather’s fascination with peacocks and a long lecture on the divine beauty of peacocks on Lucius’ part, Draco Malfoy had decided it would be best to keep a list in writing. So later that night Draco was seen spelling a piece of parchment on the wall for all, especially Scorpius, to see. It seemed the only way the boy would remember.

Draco sighed in exasperation as he dipped his quill into the inkwell, blotting the spare drops of black before writing the first rule.

Rule Number One: No person is to speak of peacocks, unless Lucius brings it up first.

Pleasant light reading!

Shhh, by stillaseeker (or here) #
Albus/Scorpius, R, short. “No man dies of love but on the stage” ~ Mansfield Park. Warning: infidelity. Summary : Scorpius watches a boy wait tables in a Muggle tea shop.

I shouldn’t have liked it. In fact, I didn’t. I read it and thought: there’s not enough of story but there’s infidelity, yuck. And it’s too poetic for me. So I closed the window. And came back to reread it a day later because there was something that made me want to read it again. And I thought: if it makes me feel for Scorpius, clearly there’s just enough story here to make it not confusing and much more, to affect the reader. And poetry is really pleasant, unobtrusive. And even infidelity, my huge squick, not so much squicks me as makes me think. So, yes, I definitely liked it. It makes a lasting impression.

Sins of the Fathers, by Blamebrampton #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, PG, novella.

Basically, this story is an expanded version of Sansa’s 20 Random Facts About Scorpius Malfoy, which you should definitely read (and read it first; it will be more fun), turned into a ‘proper’ story, with plot and so on. Sansa’s 20 facts is wonderful, one of the most appealing stories of this type that I read. When she posted it, she asked for somebody to turn it into a story, and blamebrampton answered. And her version is really wonderful too! Well-paced, intriguing, lovely, interesting, and all in all delightful. It’s unbetaed so there are a couple of typos, but they absolutely don’t spoil anything. A real pleasure!

Snatched, by Blamebrampton ##
Albus Severus/Scorpius, some background older-gen canoodling, Hugo/OC; R, ~31,000. Summary: Scorpius Malfoy has always brought out the idiot in Albus Potter. For the past seven years they’ve dealt with this through a cunning application of denial. Now James Potter’s life is being threatened, and everything else is swept to one side as they try to beat the most literal deadline any of them have ever faced.

This is one of the most dynamic, plotty fics I’ve read in a while, and also a most original mix of magic and Muggle by way of magical television. I’ve seen a few attempts at creating it in various fics but I liked this one best. You can see how a magical TV news team works at the time of a crisis, and at the same time, how magic could be used in this area. You can also see what moves those TV people and what they do when their personal and professional interests come into conflict. It’s utterly fascinating and believable. I also loved who was the initiator of the bloom of new technology in the magical world. Another thing to praise is characters and their relationships: be they work or family or friends, they are so different, so credible, so interesting! And then there’s politics! It’s 30K words that you’ll read in one sitting ‘cos you won’t want to step away. Absolutely loved it!

Stealth & Tracking, by tuawahine []
Albus Severus/Scorpius, R, ~10800 words. Summary: During an Auror training course, Scorpius realises that maybe he wants to be more than friends with Al Potter.

This fic demonstrates how the amassed fandom interpretation influences one’s opinion. I read it, liked the writing, but was going to rec it with a caveat: “It’s a lovely story if you are able to believe in characters, which are, as for me, any two guys. I don’t see Al or Scorpius in this way.” But then I thought, “WTF?” Of course they are any two guys! These two characters can be anything we want; they are any two guys by definition. How I imagine them has nothing to do with canon. It’s influenced only by the previous fictional interpretations of them. We know only something about their families, and not much even of that, which a couple of fics from the HD Wordcup demonstrated giving Scorpius siblings (see Mahaliem’s How Do You Mend a Broken Heart? and Scoradh’s DIY Messiah).

But I digress. This story is set post-Hogwarts for Al and Scorpius, and there are no family members or other canon characters that we know, to ground us. So it reads almost like an OC/OC fic set in HP-verse. But it’s written very pleasantly. It’s a lovely story with appealing main characters and with plot, even if not exactly plotty. I enjoyed it.

This Year’s Love, by hollycomb ##
Albus Severus/Scorpius, R, novel-length. Summary: Scorpius Malfoy is outed during his fifth year at Hogwarts, his older boyfriend flees the scene, and Alby Potter takes a special interest in the scandal.

This is all sorts of awesome. I’m amazed that I stumbled upon the final chapter of this long story in an AS/S community. How did I miss it?? Anyway, I’m glad I did because now I had an opportunity to read it in one go. Forget HD Wordcup and Snarry Games. This story is the reason I’m falling behind, and I don’t regret!

Albus, a rather timid Hufflepuff, knows he’s not like his classmates. He’s in no hurry to announce this fact to his family and friends, but a scandal with Scorpius Malfoy’s homosexual affair occurs, and Albus finds himself involved in sorting out the mess. The first part, Winter, shows us the blooming of innocent young love. Awkward, lovely, funny and hot. In Spring, it faces the outside world and lives through its first trials. In Summer, in Italy, it all becomes serious and real. Fall, the fourth part, is set several years later.

I’m completely entranced with the story. There’s so much to love about it! Take Harrys. Of course one might expect that there will be many boys named Harry in the next generation. But I’ve never seen it in fic done like here. Harry wanders off to greet some of his friends from Gryffindor—most of them named Harry as well, as far as Alby can remember—and Alby considers his role of escort fulfilled, grabs a roast beef sandwich from a large tray of them and turns to leave the party. Harry B and Harry Mac’s side story alternatively made me “aww” and clap hands. They are so ridiculous and sweet! All characters are a thing to remember in this story, be they OCs or the grown-up generation we are familiar with. But best of all is, of course, Alby. Your heart breaks and soars with his.

The story is vivid and multi-layered. When you think you know how it will go, it takes a turn, a believable one, and takes a second wind, and a third one, and more. It’s a bit like watching a good TV show about teenagers, if only I could find one that I would like. But I’ll take this story over any show, even an ideal one. Loved it!

Through Harry’s Eyes, by bryoneybrynn #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, Albus Severus/other, PG, 12K words. Summary: Years of working as an Auror have given Harry Potter sharp observational skills. But when his son invites Scorpius Malfoy over to visit, will Harry see something he doesn’t like? Warning(s): Some swearing, kissing and implied sexuality, blatant attempt at POV cleverness, dubious success on said attempt; Harry and Ginny happily married.

IMO, this story is made by the POV (3d person). As I said in my comment, I really liked this Harry, and it was a pleasure to see him have a happy family life, for once. Harry observes his son’s relationship with the young Malfoy for years, and comes to conclusions. Some correct, some completely wrong. There are lots of lovely and lively scenes, and it’s a really lovely story on the whole. Very enjoyable!

A Wizard’s Guide to Pocket Dwelling, by Hollycomb ##
Albus Severus/Scorpius, NC-17, 16K words. Warning(s): Past (post-epilogue) character death discussed. Summary: Eight years after Hogwarts, Albus and Scorpius are flatmates in London. Albus is a bit of a disaster. Scorpius is in love with him, but remains an innocent bystander until he has a not so brilliant idea.

I betaed this fic and since then couldn’t wait to see it posted, to rec. Because I loved it. It’s a different, fresh, and somehow very real look at the post-war generation, which many commenters note. It’s also my favourite fic from this fest (so far, but I suspect it will remain so). This after-war world isn’t all smooth and joyful, in the kind of the fairy-tale ending that was hinted at in book 7. Everyone is pretty messed-up and the world on the whole bears the consequences of the war, in various ways. It’s not a dark and hopeless tale, however. It’s complex and emotionally detached and involving at the same time. That’s not a paradox; you’ll see when/if you read. The plot is moved very nicely by the gradual revealing of the present circumstances and past mysteries. Absolutely loved it!

the world has its shine (i would drop it on a dime), by otempora01 #
Albus Severus/Scorpius, Teddy/James Jr., PG-13, novella (in 4 parts). Summary: post-series. Scorpius may have joined the Aurors of his own free will, but he stayed for Albus Severus.

Most of the epilogue generation stories that I read and liked were deeply immersed in the HP world: the boys were at school that we have seen for 6.5 books or we could see a lot of the HP characters that we know from the books, only grown up. Unlike them, this story is set years post-epilogue and is concentrated almost entirely on the next gen characters. So it reads almost as if it were an OC-centred fic. And yet not. The boys carry their family history, especially Albus and Louis, Bill and Fleur’s son, with the huge Weasley-Potter clan standing behind them. There’s magic and familiar locations and occupations, made fresh by the new eyes through which we see them, and lots of wonderful small details — flying pizza, that is Albus’s owl, for instance :)

This is a very pleasant story. It’s light and amusing on the one hand and emotional on the other. Scorpius has had a crush on his best friend (who’s not like that and isn’t aware of Scorpius’s feelings) for years. He ran away to travel Europe for a year but now came back and joined Auror training, only a year behind Albus. They resume their interrupted friendship but things very quickly go pear-shaped.

I loved secondary characters: the fierce head of Auror training programme Ron, Scorpius’s friend and room mate Louis Weasley and his activist sisters, but most of all James and Teddy. The fic isn’t without occasional typo but they don’t spoil things. Very pleasant and engaging reading!

Other

new Flora and Fauna, by Hollycomb []
Teddy/Albus Severus, NC-17, novelette. Summary: Albus learns a disturbing secret about his father and flees to Teddy Lupin’s remote cottage to avoid the aftermath. Warnings: infidelity.

The strange thing with Hollycomb’s fics, as for me, is that I like them despite their containing things that usually make me dislike a fic. Firstly, they show very clearly that the author is not British and doesn’t bother too much to Britishise her HP fiction. Secondly, they are more Muggle than what I like in HP fics — which means that despite the story being set in the magical world, characters barely use any magic in their everyday lives. BUT! I’ve read three fics of Hollycomb and liked all the three, loved two of them to bits, even. I can’t say I loved Flora and Fauna but I liked it and found it interesting enough to rec.

You know writers that write Character A the same way in every fic? Well, Hollycomb isn’t one of them. I’ve seen three versions of her Albus Severus and two versions of Teddy, and they are all very different. Actually, Teddy in this story is unlike any other Teddy I’ve seen. We sort of collectively assume, under the weight of the next gen fiction written by now, that he would grow happy, self-confident, and popular. But that’s a cliché based on nothing but our wishful thinking, isn’t it? He could grow up any kind of person, as long as the writer who writes him lets us know the whys and hows for his adult personality. Hollycomb’s Teddy in Flora and Fauna reminded me of Percy. I’m not sure Teddy’s not being a Metamorphmagus is canon. That is, I’m pretty sure it’s not, or at least it needs an explanation from the author, which she doesn’t provide here. Albus is rather maladjusted: he is drifting, having no clue what to do with his life after Hogwarts. At the beginning of the story, we find him in a situation where his entire world is crumbling before him because of what his father does.

Not a happy story nor fluffy, and most definitely not the most conventional one. But it makes one think, and Hollycomb’s writing is a thing of beauty, seriously. I simply love how the words flow from under her fingers.

Rise From the Ashes, by midnitemarauder #
Teddy/Cedric (Cedric/Roger Davies, reference to Cedric/Cho), NC-17, 35650 words. Summary: Muggles have an old saying: “Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.” Teddy never quite grasped the meaning, until he made a wish of his own. Warnings: Under 17s engaging in sexual relations.

I’m always happy to read a story about Teddy where he’s well fleshed out. I’m also happy to read a seemingly impossible pairing as long as the author makes me believe in the possibility. This story has both of those and much more. Teddy is the new generation orphan. Yes, he has a huge adopted family but what he really wants is to know more about his parents, father in particular. Cedric is a Hufflepuff legend, the one whose real virtues and merits are far outshined by the polish added by class after class of Hufflepuffs telling heroic stories about him. His portrait in the common room doesn’t like to speak of himself. One day Teddy unexpectedly finds a way to learn more about his father and, accidentally, Cedric. The story is gripping, and I liked it a lot even if I thought that the plot wasn’t properly resolved by the end — no, wait, that’s not true. It’s rounded up alright, but what I mean is: I wouldn’t mind seeing what happens afterwards, and as I gathered from other comments, many people are with me on this. So, sequel?

Scorpius Malfoy’s Very Bad Week, by Snegurochka Lee #
Scorpius/James Jr./Teddy and permutations. Hints of background Harry/Draco, NC-17, ~25,000 words. Summary: The company of Gryffindors was bad enough. The company of naked Gryffindors – a Potter and a werewolf spawn, no less, and totally unasked for, thank you very much – was outrageous. The company of naked, muscled Gryffindors claiming a sodding Muggle prophecy device had foretold his seduction was just too much to take. All things considered, Scorpius Malfoy really was having a very, very bad week. Warnings: Consensual sex among people aged 16, 17 and 24. DH-compliant.

Absolutely wonderful. Scorpius has to take Muggle studies. It’s a various-age class, so Scorpius has to take it with James Potter. Who’s openly and outrageously gay. Who’s the only gay boy in Hogwarts, well, as far as Scorpius knows — because Wizarding world isn’t very accepting of gay people. Scorpius has a plan: he charms a Muggle Ouija board to get what he wants from James (no, not that, you perv! Well, maybe a bit of that, too :D) but things go pear-shaped when the board begins saying things he didn’t expect. Very enjoyable, great sex, charming and interesting!

Slytherin Intentions, by Mahaliem #
Scorpius/various; PG. Summary: Draco is concerned about Scorpius’ romantic attachments.

Very amusing. Scorpius keeps falling in love, and Draco becomes more and more desperate. Lovely, funny, light, and a real pleasure to read. I betaed this fic but still couldn’t help rereading it when I saw it posted. Fun!

Next gen crossgen (Harry/Scorpius, Draco/Albus Severus, etc)

new Almost Lover, by fbowden #
Draco/James Jr., NC-17, 2,200 words. Summary: James’ fantasy becomes reality, but for how long? Warning(s): Adultery, m/m sex.

Pretty amazing. I found this fic via Snegurochka_Lee’s rec, so let me quote her: “It’s 2200 words that feels like 22,000. In a good way.” Quite so. This fic pretends to be a PWP. Well, theoretically, it is. But not really. The yet unknown author expresses so much through one sex scene that really, if one can do it, why would they need to spend thousands of words on establishing the settings and characters? It’s certainly unnecessary here. James and Draco come alive in this short scene, and the details are chosen so flawlessly that you can reconstruct their relationships with people around them just from them. So emotionally precise, so succinct and at the same time so expressive! Wonderful story!

The Door, by Klynie #
Teddy/Harry; implied Harry/Sirius, NC-17, short. Warnings: Chanslash (Teddy is 14); borderline dubious consent; portrait voyeurism. Written for pornish_pixies Challenge 08: Magical Devices. Summary: Teddy Lupin needs to know the secrets that lay hidden behind The Door.

I like chan when it’s Harry/older man but am vaguely squicked when it’s Harry/next gen boy. I believe I just need more examples to build up my tolerance :) Anyway, this is a PWP with both, the former implied, the latter graphic. I found the story both enticing and disturbing because we can see here just how young 14 really can be, which I often forget reading about Harry. This fic somehow brought the age gap into a sharper relief for me.

There’s also a very interesting magical device: the door. Day after day, Teddy watches Harry go into a room behind the forbidden door, the door that doesn’t let anyone except Harry in. And then one day, Teddy enters after him. Interesting story!

new The Evil Devil Child and the Perfect Gift, by who_la_hoop #
Scorpius, Albus Severus, Harry, Draco in almost all possible combinations; NC-17, ~16,500 words. Summary: When Scorpius Malfoy – Legilimens-extraordinaire, perfect son and all-round kinky little bastard – discovers that his father harbours a certain fantasy involving Harry Potter, a submissive attitude and a priceless antique dining table, he sets out to make his father’s dreams come true. And if succeeding in his mission involves putting up with a naked, willing Albus Severus? Well, that’s a price that Scorpius will just have to pay.
Warning(s): An excess of deliciously explicit sodomy; a thrilling lack of monogamy; vice between father and son (but only in company); boys who are not yet men by the rigorous standards of the USA (Al and Scorpius are 17); the shocking sight of a boy in a frilly skirt; taking the Lord’s name in vain and other language most foul; and – worst of all – four men showing a disturbing lack of shame about the filthy, filthy acts that they commit.

Guh. GUH! A terribly hot and interesting PWP. So hot, and the author leads the readers through all the way so skilfully, that I’m rather at a loss for words. The story is kinky like hell (in the best way, as for me) but I kept mentally fanning myself because it was so hot and so damn funny in places. Scorpius totally stole the spotlight. He is unselfconscious, devious, and at the same time good in his own twisted way. I loved him. And loved the story, too. I did think the ending part was a bit over the top but it didn’t diminish my overall enjoyment of the story.

“Since I look like you, and Al looks like him… Do I need to go on?”

Draco looked up into his son’s face, and wondered if Scorpius was actually human, or some sort of demon sent to torment him.

Scorpius for the Minister! Seriously :)

Family Gathering, by Florahart #
James/James II. No! Don’t flee! NC-17, short. Warnings: James II is 17. There is not actual incest here. Not AU. Summary: All James Potter wanted was to get away from his enormous extended family and do a little quiet reading. He didn’t expect to find family history in the attic.

Flora is like the Department of Mysteries. I mean, her stories are always full of unexpected, creative magical details, and pairings that shouldn’t work but which she makes work in most persuasive ways. James/James II with no actual incest and not AU! Aren’t you curious? James Jr and his family come alive in this fic. You can feel his frustration with being besieged by his numerous relatives at his own birthday party, his desire to get away. Vivid, clever, hot!

new The Honey Trap, by The Con Cept #
Harry/Scorpius (mentions of Scorpius/Others), NC-17, ~10K words. Summary: Slytherins are plotting, Gryffindors are losing their tempers, and Harry’s caught in the middle. Some things never change. Warning(s): chan (Scorpius is 15), jealousy, teacher/student, rimming.

If I were to write caveats for this rec, they would be as follows. 1) I’m not sure I completely believed in this Harry. Can’t say I disbelieved either. I think that if you showed me now to me at 17, I’d be flabbergasted, so yeah, Harry can change and grow up too. I did believe in this Scorpius, which is a silly thing to say because next gen characters can be almost anything as long as some explanation for how they turned that way is offered. I liked this version of him anyway. 2) The story takes a rather sharp turn closer to the end. Again, I wouldn’t call it unbelievable. I would probably like a bit more foreshadowing but I wouldn’t say the turn is jarring.

But I don’t really think this rec needs any caveats. I enjoyed the story. I opened it to check, as usual, and it led me from the beginning to the end effortlessly. Harry Potter, a divorced father of three, has begun to teach at Hogwarts. Scorpius flirts with him, getting closer step after tiny step. “Give me an inch…” He’s very Slytherin but — unexpectedly — also very lovely. He might be manipulative but he really just wants to be loved. Well, I think so. Albus Severus is extremely displeased with what Scorpius does, on top of being at the angstiest stage of teenage hormonal rebellion. And Harry? Well, he’s only human. He tries to do his best which the 15-year-olds around him don’t always see as such.

Hard to not be in HP fandom when things that catch my attention keep coming up :)

new How to Circumvent a Fidelius Charm, by Florahart #
Albus Severus/Severus, NC-17, ~7500 words. Summary: Albus Severus wants to meet (and, uh, enjoy) a hero he’s heard of all his life. Severus wants to remain in hiding. Albus Severus, however, is persistent. Warning(s): I assume there’s no need to warn for age difference–this is set seven-plus years post-epilogue.

There can be only one problem with this fic apart from a couple of typos but who cares? If you can imagine Snape rather mellowed and, well, not relaxed but rid of some of his control and paranoia after two decades of successful hiding, and if you can see Albus Severus like this version — which, come on, can be any — you’ll enjoy it. If not, pity. Because this fic is very amusing. I’ve been grinning all the way. Young Albus, magically strong, very cunning, persistent, and horny like all teens finds his way into Snape’s painstakingly hidden house, collaborates with his house-elf who has peculiar logic and loyalty and tries to worm his way into Snape’s bed. Snape is not amused. But rather interested, hard as he might protest. Lots of banter and eager young perviness. Besides, Albus Severus/Severus is my dream come true! So what’s not to like?

In Wolf’s Clothing, by Violet Quill #
Teddy/Draco, implied Harry/Draco and Fenrir/Draco, and a couple of spoiler pairings you can learn by highlighting them in the fic post; NC-17, 9300 words. Warnings: prostitution, orgasm denial, wanking, consensual D/s, whipping, light bondage, dubious consent, implied (past) non-con, implied incestuous themes, implied underage sex. Summary: Teddy would do anything to help his makeshift family, including going undercover at a werewolf brothel to solve a very personal crime. DH-compliant.

One would think it’s a kinky PWP looking at the pairings and warnings but it’s actually quite plotty. James Jr. is bitten by a werewolf. Teddy, who’s failed his Potion N.E.W.T. and so wasn’t taken into the Auror programme by Harry and wasn’t allowed to help when he asked, goes to work in a werewolf brothel anyway. Which turns more dangerous and lets him find more than he’d probably like. This is an absorbing reading, well-written. I liked the ending in particular. Aww, poor damaged Draco.

new Make Your Own Bed, by melusinahp #
Draco/Albus Severus, Draco/Astoria, NC-17, ~9K words. Warnings: Cross-gen, infidelity. Summary: ‘The best-laid plans of mice and men, Go oft awry.’ — Robert Burns

I wasn’t going to read this fic (as I’m not in HP at the moment); I was going to simply check the headers. But my eye caught the first line, and here I am, inhaled the entire fic. It’s unusual. I’d expect either plotless smut or romance but it’s neither. That is, it has elements of both. It also rather nasty as nasty is Draco whose business transaction was broken by Harry and who decides to seduce his son in retort, of sorts. Only it doesn’t go as he plans. Why? Because it’s Draco Malfoy, not the fanon super-smooth and urbane prince of Slytherin but rather his canon counterpart who does stupid and ill-considered things as often as succeeds in his plans. As a result, he has a terrible mess on his hands. I was prepared to like this story even if it stayed about manipulation, its results (or anti-results), and lessons learned or not learned by all the parties. But it’s better. It gave me that emotional connection I crave in my reading. So, the first Draco/Albus that I liked. It’s a reason to celebrate, isn’t it?

new Possession of the Heart, by romaine24 #
Harry/Scorpius (Harry/Ginny Harry/OC OC/Scorpius), NC-17, ~51,500 words (6 LJ posts). Summary: Harry loves his life and would never want it to change. But when violence upsets the very foundations of his world, he finds himself turning to the one person whose heart he’s protected from the start. Warning(s): Character Death (not Harry, Scorpius, Draco), Violence.

Harry/Scorpius, 50K words long, no chan? Of course I clicked. And oh damn, I somehow forgot how long a fic 50K words make :) Took me a day to read it. But it was a pleasant experience.

Trying to evaluate the merits and drawbacks of this story (in my opinion only, of course), I don’t think its strength lies in the writing itself. Not that it’s bad. It’s just not very polished, possibly due to the fest time constraints. It could do with another edit, for flow and typo/error catching. The strength, as for me, is in the story the author tells. It’s long, milti-layered, encompassing a large number of events without losing its focus on Harry and Scorpius. Harry properly meets Scorpius when the latter is 11 and sneakily bullied by his yearmates at Hogwarts where Harry works as a guest lecturer three times a year (October 2017) and at the end of the story, it’s May 2032. The next gen characters grow a lot; you can see the change. It’s fascinating. I liked it very much that Harry didn’t fall in love with Scorpius at once — well, not even at twice :) Instead, that thing between them grows, very slowly. The story is in turn exciting, heart-breaking, very tense, and lovely. There’s some original magic in it. It’s interesting to read all the way, holding one’s attention and evoking all the right emotions. Wonderful reading on the whole.

Something Borrowed, by Snegurochka Lee #
Charlie/Teddy (past Charlie/Remus and Charlie/Tonks), NC-17, ~7,200 words. Warnings/General Content: Many incestuous insinuations, but no actual incest. Infidelity, but surprisingly little angst about that. DH-compliant. An appalling lack of general morality. Summary: “You can imagine it, can’t you, Teddy?” Charlie slipped a hand up the other man’s chest, fingers curling into the collar of his shirt. “I was about the age you are now, and your dad was about the age I am now, when we first got together. Your mum, though… that was a whole other story.”

You must be used to me saying in my recs something like “It could be a PWP but is not” or “This is PWP but has PLOT” etc. This fic? Is a PWP. It’s Teddy and Victoire’s wedding. Weasley relatives of all shapes and colours erm, shapes again have gathered. Among them there’s one who fucks everything that moves. Charlie. Easy-going and sexy. Who set his eyes on Teddy on this fine day. Scorching hot and wicked, and the ending is funny. Pleasure!

Gen

The Asp at Hogwarts, by Inkwolf #
Gen, Albus Severus-centric, novel-length.

Young Albus Potter thinks his parents are ‘just’ a Head Auror and a former Quidditch star; he doesn’t know about their involvement in the past war because nobody at home talks about it. He comes for his first year in Hogwarts, is mistakenly (or not) sorted in Slytherin (while Malfoy brat is sorted in Gryffindor) and begins the life of adventure and quests, led by a mysterious ghost and the new generation’s answer to Fred and George Weasley, who’s also the last of the Princes. Hogwarts’ new Headmaster is none other than Cornelius Fudge, ever paranoid and not very bright. Mysteries of the past ask to be solved, and new dangers loom at the edges.

Albus is pretty clueless and it turns out to be a good narrative device. We have to follow his discoveries and adventures and get distracted when he is, meanwhile paying more attention to the clues the author leaves than he does. When I began reading, I thought it would be a FFnet-like fic only with decent SPAG, meaning lots of plot consisting of everyday small adventures of a new Hogwarts student, lack of characterisation, and the story falling apart at the seams. But it turned out not like that at all. Well, not quite. There is indeed lots of everyday small adventures but the story doesn’t fall apart. Quite the opposite: the author ties up all small subplots into a bigger one, which also gets resolved. There’s character development, believable and interesting. We can see how Albus grows and changes under the influence of his house, his new friends, but also his family.

It’s a very long story; it isn’t fast either. So it’s a really nice treat if you have a free weekend or a couple of evenings. One thing to note: it’s posted at MuggleNet forums, so the format is nothing like what I’m used to when reading fiction. It’s three pages of long posts. Not confusing per se but unusual: don’t forget to click ‘next page’ when you finish page 1. There are also a couple of small canon errors, but they are really small and don’t change anything so I was able to completely ignore them.

Albus hurried back with his potion-making kit and looked around for a likely partner. He was still angry with his Slytherin classmates, and Rose was there but seemed to be carrying on with her new role as Scorpius Malfoy’s Siamese twin. Finally he settled on a sad-faced Hufflepuff girl who was already chopping ingredients alone at a desk in the rear of the class.

“Hullo,” said Albus. “Do you have a partner yet? Do you mind if I…” The girl just shrugged, so Albus put down his load and began to organize ingredients.

“I’m Albus Potter,” he said. “What’s your name?”

“Drop dead,” she snarled. Startled, Albus looked at her again, and suddenly recognized the girl.

“Oh, I remember,” he said. “You’re…um…” She was Voldemortine Avery. It seemed like an awful thing to call anyone. After an awkward pause, Albus asked, “Do you have a middle name?”

“It’s Bellatrix,” the girl said bitterly.

“Oh! Well, that’s pretty!” Albus said with relief.

“Dry up and rot,” snarled the girl.

Leaving feedback turned out to be a pain. I still haven’t managed, and not for the lack of trying!

Teddy Lupin and the Forest Guard, by Fernwithy #
Summary: A First Year at Hogwarts Fic. Gen, novel-length.

A very enjoyable, detailed story that lets us see HP characters through the eyes of the next generation. I really like how Fernwithy writes (should I say ‘creates’?) Teddy, how some elements of history repeat themselves while others are completely different; how Teddy tries to come to grips with his family’s past. I like OCs, especially Ruth(less) :) Very enjoyable!

Thanks for the suggestion, although I don’t take them here. It’s my rec list where I rec the fic that I liked, not a themed list where I take everything as long as the spelling isn’t too bad :)
