A fair warning: I’ve been out of HP fandom for quite a while by now. As I read HP fiction nearly not at all nowadays, please don’t expect these listings of mine to be kept up to date. If you report a broken link or suggest a new addition, I might fix/add it… in half a year. So please don’t use these lists as a proper gateway but rather as a general guidance for what to look in other places if you find a dead end here. For new stuff, check comments.
What I take:
- this isn’t quite a job-fic search. Art is such a disobedient thing that I decided to broaden the criteria: nearly anything to do with arts will qualify. If Harry paints, if Snape publishes a book of poetry, if Ron becomes a rock-star or Neville plays the piano, if Dumbledore writes memoires or Lupin is a famous detective-fiction writer undercover, if Luna becomes a sculptor, it all fits.
- IMPORTANT: painting, singing, writing etc must be a significant detail of the fic!
- Dean Thomas’ drawing fits ONLY if it developes into something post canon, if we see it as his chosen future career or life-time hobby, in detail, like in
’s A Thousand Beautiful Things. - Fine Art classes and art projects are acceptable.
- Writing non-fictional books NOT in one’s professional field, i.e. memoires, books on history etc, is ok.
King Draco’s Code (What I don’t take):
- no fics where somebody sings just for him/herself, if it’s not a public activity or performance. So, just singing in the shower won’t fit;
- no karaoke (in karaoke-bars or at parties);
- if somebody’s playing an instrument, drawing or writing is mentioned but not described, that won’t do. However, if somebody’s being a writier/artist/musician is described in the respect of his/her social standing, it will qualify;
- if Dean Thomas draws during his Hogwarts years, however detailed it is, it won’t fit; however if we can see him paint/draw as his future career, or if we see how his hobby is developed in post-Hogwarts years, it will fit;
- writing non-fictional books in one’s professional field, i.e. scientific books, textbooks, won’t do;
- diaries don’t qualify. Nor do letters.
- doodles on their essays don’t count as drawing;
- journalism doesn’t count (I’m tentatively planning a separate list for it);
- RPGs don’t qualify;
- listening to music doesn’t qualify;
- fanfiction writing doesn’t qualify;
- taking into consideration the dangers of this theme (imagine FFnet’s super Mary Sues who play guitars, piano, violins, who paint, sing like Sirens and whatnot), I’m not taking fics where OCs sing, play instruments, draw or write. And I’m reserving the right to reject any fic where I notice a Mary-Sueish Hermione, Ginny or anybody else (I might not notice though).
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven’t read;
- do not bring fics you didn’t like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I’d be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are.

Various Weasleys, Hermione, Remus, Kingsley, Harry, Snape, and just about everybody else, if you look hard enough, NC-17, short. Warnings: Vague and not so vague references to Weasleycest, spankings, prostitution, aphrodisiacs, non-con, pegging, cross-dressing, bondage…oh, the list goes on. Summary: Severus Snape discovers a new vocation in the least likely of places, and his work is appreciated at last.

Finding Himself, by Minisinoo ##
Cedric/Hermione [Harry/Cho], NC-17, AU 5th year. Summary: ‘The boy who almost died’ has to figure out what it means that he didn’t. Harry’s tulmultous fifth year at Hogwarts is Cedric’s seventh and final. Bound together by a shared trauma survived, both boys fall under Ministry fire and suspicion, and both undergo a ‘deconstruction’ of sorts in the face of that crisis. Who is Cedric Diggory? He must find himself amid rumors of war, the awkwardness of falling in love, and a crippling personal tragedy. (parallel canon)” Cedric’s mother is depicted as a professional artist, and one of the sub-themes/plots of that novel deals with artwork and how Wizarding art might be something rather different from Wizarding portraiture. Cedric is presented as a budding poet, and it’s also a sub-thread that turns out to be semi-significant.

I’ve been looking for a fic for months but I don’t remember much about it other than a disguised Harry lives in hogsmead and writes a potions book that gets him and Sev together. Anyone know it’s name or where to find it?

I know you posted months ago (and might not wander back this way for a while), but perhaps the story you’re thinking of is Crumbling Pedestal, wherein Harry goes back in time, is renamed Heru, returns to the future 20 years later and almost a full year before he wound up in the past, is promptly disgusted by the potions books, and proceeds to rewrite them.
